Which UK Freshwater Species would you get rid of?

kids start out catching carp like that instead of gudgeon and little perch and roach.

I know which I'd sooner of caught when I was a kid and it wouldn't have been little gudgeon etc. Regarding overstocking established ponds etc then that's up to the owner how they stock it wether you or I like it or not. I'd prefer people to build purpose made puddles to fish for their stockies rather than spoiling natural waters by overloading them with carp or any other species for that matter........ but that's life, and it certainley ain't the carps fault.

Any and all non-native Cyprinids

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

DO SIGNAL CRAYFISH COUNT? :P

Now there's a thought......sorry to digress but crayfish are for legal purposes classed as fish in freshwater. Do we get criminalised for keeping them or throwing them back? Come the new legislation of compulsory C+R we're buggered either way as we are also legally not allowed to return them!

Another well thought out plan goes tits up!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

I thought of a few quick humorous responses to your answer mate, none of them are politically correct (no problem for me there) but my main worry, if you got rid of carp, would be the amount of white vans, bivvies and bleeping going on down by the river when I fancied a bit of a relaxed days fishing B)

not to mention the bloody great queue and the arguments over who got to press the button :D

I did think Carp would be popular, but as you point out if you took them away what will happen to all those Carp anglers. They may put their rods away for good, but more likely they would find a new large species to worship. The rivers will be packed with anglers carbeling. Would commercial waters also just now be stocked with Tench & Barbel as good fighting replacements. Would we start to see over stocked commercial Pike Waters?

Many anglers will still want to catch "big fish" and so the chances are if Carp were not around in so many waters, more anglers will do doubt be targeting the fish the general coarse or non carp specialist targets.

I know Roach & Tench seem to score high on polls of favourite fish, but I would suggest the most fished for species may be the Carp. So for those who prefer to fish for Pike, Tench, Bream, Chub or Barbel I would suggest that you may want to keep Carp as it helps reduce the competition for your species. With out Carp the circus would just choose another species and from other posts it's the circus attached to Carp fishing that many do not like but and not the species.

Stephen

I'm not sure what they arethere seems to different types of them too. They have no mouths and usually come from muddy stillwaters...

Catfish. We will rue the day when massive cats are roaming the Thames and other waterways.

Then top mouth gudgeon, sunbleak and all these other freaky species.

Then ornamental carp.

How about Ide? I've never caught one, but then that maybe coz I've no ide 'ere :D

I can't understand people who dislike carp

I don't hate carp actually. I hate the fact a good tench water is often a good carp water so you can only actually get a swim midweek and then it'll be between idiots with 48 cans of Stella for an overnighter a radio set as loud as possible and 3lb tc rods perfect for casting 6oz leads into you swim over and over again until they get the perfect cast!

There are loads of very good tench waters near me and all are ruined by idiot carp anglers

Rich

edit:

I'm sure not all carpers are **** up idiots just whenever I fish near me my session is ruined by them. By the way I believe they fished one such water for catching the impossible and caught a big tench but couldn't use the footage due to the noise etc.

Btw the last carpless pit was filled with them after the 2007 floods now it's packed all year round ...

There certainly are not many that dont mind them.

I fall into that camp - I don't mind them. Dislike Manchester United though, particularly tonight. I'm from the other side of the city. :(
