Eel fishing

Recommended Posts

Just been told that a lake has eel's 8lb!!!!! Loads of them aswell. I'm not going to mention the lake, because i want a crack at it myself.

Is it the right time of year to fish for them? Where would i fish?

I know that i'll be using lobworms and half roach. But what hooks do i use? I was thinking size 4 with the lob, and a huge hook on the roach(or maybe a treble hook?).

As you can see, i need alot of help, and i wont forget my wire trace, as there are huge pike aswell.

(p.s. the lake is in Merseyside, hehehe... northern lads got some big fish for a change!!!)

Whoops, you obviously know little about eel fishing! May I respectfully suggest you leave them alone until you have more experience.

There is an excellent bit about eel fishing on one of the Screaming Reels episodes but when it is next going to be broadcast I have no idea.

Big eels are very old and very fragile and deserve 110% care and respect. Like pike, pays to go with a good specialist angler who really knows the species.

Sorry to be such a downer but eels are in a precarious state at the moment.

if someone on Merseyside has told you about a lake with huge pike and 8lb eels then be careful. Park your car somewhere where you can keep an eye on the wheels. :D

Stefan.

Do your self a favour and the eels and follow Peters advice.

The idea of a "BIG HOOK or even a treble" sent a shiver down my spine.

There is a group of eel anglers with a long history of catching eels.

Check them out their called the National Anguilla Club.

We have had many members who have fished many of the waters on Merseyside over the years, some of the waters have appeared in articles in the general press as well.

If you can get hold of a copy of john Sidleys eel fishing, (out of print but still on ebay from time to time)get one.

If you really want to know more about the NAC or eel fishing you can always email me.

I only live at Wigan so I'm not too far away from you.

I'd hate for you to end up killing an eel through lack of information.

Respectfully.

beezer:

Dont you people eat eel's anymore? A good sised lob worm on a sise 8 hook, when the float starts to move off give er time to take the hook and voila! Breakfast.

Hi Beezer.

With the up most respect.

Do a search for eel decline,

The facts might surprise / shock you.

After all most waters in the uk have a "return ALL fish dead or alive" policy on them.

So really taking eels for breakfast is like taking roach or carp to eat. and no body likes the imigrates for that do they?.

What is it these days for a packet of bacon from the supermarket?. or a can of dog/cat food for those people who night line for them 40pence a tin for the good stuff.

I can't see a need to take wild fish for food these days after all rashening went out, what about 50 odd years ago.

Do the eel a favour and put her back alive, Times have moved on.

Some attidudes need to as well.

No,no!

They were just some stupid questions, i'm going with a friend of my dads, who is a member of the NAC. He will show me how to do it, but he hasn't fished the water for years. I just wanted to know for me so i don't seem an absolute idiot when talking with him.

And about the car wheels, that joke got old years ago. Is your name Boris by any chance?
