True, although the Wingham pike may have gone full blown vegan now and won't touch any thing with eggs in it :P

Every year I love reading the planning details for the Wingham weekend.

I would not trade the memory of our trip for anything but knowing that we'll likely not ever have another chance to go or to see any of you again is an occasion of bittersweet sadness.

A note to any on AN who have not attended a fish-in at Wingham - you really should. If you were planning to get married that weekend, reschedule; if your wife is due to deliver your first child that weekend, make sure someone with a video camera can be with her; if you are due to deliver your first child that weekend, remember that babies don't need hospitals and that first babies are usually late; if you think Wingham is too far to travel, take the word of someone who came over 4000 miles that it isn't.

Even if you can't fish, Peggy's cooking is worth the trip.

For those of you who haven't been to a Wingham fish-in before, please try to make the effort - think of it as a once-in-a-lifetime treat. It's a chance to fish one of the country's top specimen waters for free - it's an amazing opportunity. Add into that some seriously good BBQs, great company and advice, and all manner of people you've never met offering to lend you what you need and helping out with tactics etc., it really shouldn't be missed :)

I made the mistake of going once in 2006, and I've been a hopeless addict ever since.

The chance of catching some seriously big fish is very real (4 of my PBs are from there - and at one time it was 5!). And the setting and wildlife is just stunning. Even if you don't catch much, I can't think of anywhere on earth I would rather spend a few days.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Sounds tempting, I've made a commitment to myself to try and catch a biggish tench this year, and some crucians. How I'll fit this in amongst all the fly fishing and obsessive trotting I'll never know. In fact, I haven't fished a lake (coarse fishing) for around 10 years, maybe more. I really must try it this year - I nearly went this summer, but the car went past the turning and I ended up at the Kennet again!

This Wingham thing sounds like it might tick the tench box at the very least.

I'm free so far and hope to be able to go. I've certainly never been before.

arbocop - one thing that is especially nice about Wingham is that no one knows how large a fish may come out.

Big lakes, lightly fished, well managed, and with a youngish population so the largest this year is quite a bit larger than it was last year and a great many fish that have never been caught.

I've heard it called a hard water (at least some of the time) but Elton catches so I question how hard it is. :D :D

As Weirwulf mentioned it on another topic, I'm bumping this up. This was Steve's original post, containing links to the last few years' catch reports:

I've already had an e-mail asking about the dates of the next Wingham Fish-In so that the right days could be booked off work. As many of you will be sorting out your annual leave now, I'm posting the dates here on the Forum. They're Sat May 22nd to Monday May 24th.

Wingham Coarse Lake is a syndicate gravel pit in Kent that's normally members only. For those of you who don't display signatures here's a link to the Wingham web site: http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/fisheries/wingham.htm

We got beaten by the weather last year but previous Fish-Ins have produced bream to 16-06, tench to 10-04 (and averaging nearly 8lbs!) plus perch to 3-09.

For the last 4 years' catch reports see http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/Wingham...am+catch+report and http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/Wingham...am+catch+report and http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/Wingham...am+catch+report and http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/Wingham...am+catch+report

Peggy will be doing her optional huge BBQ each lunchtime at a cost of approx £5 per day. As always though the fishing itself is free of charge.

Anyone who's made at least 1 post on the Forum when I start taking bookings is invited, but if I'm oversubscribed priority as usual will be given to those who haven't been before.

However please note that I won't be taking bookings until approx May 1st.

Even though it will mean I don't get a place I really can't urge you all enough to try to make it - Steve and Peggy's (and the baliff's) hospitality, the amazing setting and wildlife, the company, and last but definitely not least the fishing are all really outstanding.

Even if I'm not fishing I hope to be there anyway, and so will be available to take photos of PBS - if you look at the 2007 catch report when I was fishing next to Richard you'll see that I've had plenty of practice!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
