Twas a Haddock.

It didn't look like a haddock

It certainly didn't taste like a haddock

But that could be because it wasn't a haddock, it was a whiting ;)

Could have eaten a record then. ;)

It very probably would have been a record if it had been caught on rod and line instead of bought from a fishmongers.

The boat caught record at 6.12 isn't that much smaller.

BTW, it was not particularly good eating.

Boat caught Whiting 6lb 12oz by N R Croft , Falmouth

Shore caught Whiting 4lb 0oz by T Dell , Abbotsbury

With 6lb 12oz being rod caught at a guess a 7lb to 8lb fish is not beyond a possibility. One for Dave who may well have some inside info.

I fish, I catches a few, I lose a few, BUT I enjoys. Anglers Trust PM

Hiya,

I've seen one of just over 6lb caught on rod n line from the shore up here back in the 70ies, it was eaten before the person (my brother) realised it was a record.

Do we know where the fish came from?

Whiting extend to waters off Iceland and Northern Norway. Both those countries are very conscious of looking after their sustainable stocks, so less fishing pressure and the potential for bigger fish than those caught around Britain.

6 lb-plus is a big whiting, but I see no reason why fish of 8lb shouldn't be out there somewhere.
