But if you need any tips then please ask; I've won the FishingMagic species race twice, 33 species in a week ain't bad...

Thats an amazing tally in a week, you would give Matt Hayes a run for hi money.

It's bad enough you suggest putting away my Shimano babies for a few weekends but suggesting a MATCH ROD are you crazy, next you will be suggesting I use a POLE and god forbid give up the still water lake fishing and head to a CANAL :o

Despite having a large number of rods, I do not actually own a match rod. However I bought Paula a Shimano Alivio match rod a few weeks ago which will no doubt be used to give me a good thrashing with :D

We are off to a small float only water on the Luton ticket called Woodland Lake for a few hours on Sunday for some general fish bothering for small Carp, Tench, Bream, Roach etc. It should be fun as I do not usually do this sort of fishing unfortunatly I will be well over gunned with my Carp float road. Maybe one day I will be tempted in to the dark arts of using a match rod :D

Nah, don't bother with a pole, a 5m whip should do you :P

My species hunting is of a somewhat different tempo than "how many in a week?" , although Norma and I did take part in (and won with a total of 60 UK species) a year-long pairs species hunt on another forum in 2007, but mainly I am interested only in our life lists.

However, the more species you catch, the more difficult it becomes to catch a new one. Almost inevitably, the time taken to research and locate each new species increases as you try to fill in the gaps of the scarcer ones. You have to enjoy the research and location as much as the catching if you want the best out of species hunting.

Most people taking part in the year-long UK species hunt referred to above found the first 40 easy - after 50 it gets more difficult, so imagine trying to improve on 101......

As for "competing" with your better half - that way madness lies......

My World list (on 1/1/2010) was 418, Norma's was 193.

However, our COMBINED list was 446 - which means I have caught 253 species she hasn't.

BUT, that also means she has 28 species that I haven't - and its the nature of four of those species that winds me up :)

Arctic Charr (in England, caught whilst spinning for trout)

Pacific Blue Marlin (200 lb)

Pacific Short-nosed Spearfish (rare and at 60 lb just below the Ladies IGFA record)

Atlantic Blue Marlin (900lb plus)

Norma has caught only one of each, but why is every billfish I hook either a sailfish or a striped marlin ? Note, when trolling for big game fish, we take it in turns to take strike, so we usually wind up with equal numbers of fish each, but the "special" ones only appear when its Norma's turn to take strike. Witchcraft, that's what it is

Joking apart, we really fish as a team, and enjoy each fish as it comes, regardless of whose turn it is to strike, but it is a strange coincidence how the premium fish come when its not my turn.

Just one tip when fishing tropical waters - especially on reefs where similar fish are coming thick and fast. Take photographs (more than one per fish if necessary) Even if the fish appears similar to one you have already - take photographs. Even if you are anxious to get back in the action - take photographs.

Back at home, with the photos on your screen, and time to go through the field guides at leisure, you will find that you have caught three species of grouper, not one.

If you are not excited by that, you are not a true species hunter. :)

A very good tip, we caught a lot of Groupers and Snapper last year in Mexico and is was not until after when reviewing the pictures and doing some research that we noticed that they were different. As you point out once you get in a rhythm catching reef fish they do start to look the same.

And you are right about fishing as a team, it makes the experience more enjoyable and we do get excited for each other when one of us catches a fish that neither of us have had before. But saying that I am still a little annoyed that she has caught a Black Pacu and I have not, but then she did go to the trouble of fishing with a chunk of apple which I dismissed it as a waste of time. But when fishing abroad we generally take it in turns to strike a run, I'm lucky that she is interested in fishing, it allows me to include plenty of fishing trips in our holidays.

Swop her reel line for PVA string, tell her it's a new batch of Big Game clear, that should even things up a bit, although I'm not sure she'll believe her bite off ratio when fishing for skimmers. Alternatively, see if you could find some of the original Vanish flourocarbon, same sort of qualities as PVA string !!!! :D

With my luck it would be my reel that I put it on. I'm resigned to loosing anyway. If she enjoys catching more species this year then me and it makes her happy thats all good. I don't want to win and if I change my targets for the year and spend lots of time chasing fish that do not interest me I will not enjoy my fishing as much.

But I may venture on to some commercial waters this year to try for a few fish to add to my over all species list. An Orfe/Ide would be nice and if I pick up a few fish to add to the year list so be it.

  • 2 weeks later...
Learn to use the washing machine never, its to hard to work out. I think I would rather end up in the garden with a large tin bath, bar of carbolic soap and wash board. It may not get the clothes as clean, but if I got bored I could form my own skiffle band.

I'm a bit of a ludditte when it comes to technology.

Just for reference, the washing machine is the larger of the two white appliances in the kitchen, the smaller one is the tumble dryer :-).

I thought that you were more annoyed at the 4, 40lb plus siamese carp that I caught on apple.

I think the trick was to cut the apple piece into the shape of a boilie (don't leave any skin on), they are slightly bouyant too!
