Number of fish it will support depends on a number of factors.

The requirements for trout are excellent water quality and low water temperature - a shallow lake will get warm enough in a hot summer to kill all of your fish. I know a local trout water which is about 12 feet deep and which stops stocking fish and closes in late June because it can't support trout through the hotter months. Another stays open, but you see a lot more dead and dying fish about in hot weather.

Best thing to do is to phone your local environment agency office and ask for advice - should be free.
