Aquarium (roach perch)

2 days ago i put 2 roach and 2 perch in my new tank.the dnt even make 1 oz each and are in a tank 1x2x2.i have a triple filter and pump that flows pretty fast with 3 natural plants in it with a gravel bottom.i have fed a tiny peace of liquidised bread no bigger than a penny and i have found the roach love getting stuck into it during the night.

the perch however do not seem to be feeding.i have fed 5-10 live and dead maggotts n 5 casters to see if they will take them but as of yet i havent noticed a change.they seem active enough in the tank more so than the roach but i am worried that i have made a mistake n they wont survive.

are they still a lil spooked by there new surroundings or is there more to it.do i need to make a certain feed/feeding pattern or is there something im doin wrong.

can i keep 2 roach and 2 perch in a tank or is this a bad idea.

please help me out if you can because i dont want to casue the fish any harm, cheers !

I kept a few Perch for a while in a 4 foot tank as a child and had a nightmare trying to get them to feed, no matter what I tried them on they refused to eat. In the end 2 of them died, maybe from starvation. I moved the last 3 in to a pond with Koi and Orfe and they grew on quickly. I'm guessing the various pond life in the pond and the extra weed and cover suited them better.

Maybe if you add a lot of cover with extra plants in the tank they may settle in better and feed, as once my Perch were moved to the pond they started to accept worms etc that they flatly refused to touch in the tank. I am guessing that the tank I kept them in may not have suited them and stressed them out.

I once worked with a guy who was doing some work on perch. He originally obtained some young-of-the-year fish from Windermere which I helped him net, but he found that they were very skittish and would not settle and thrive in an aquarium. On advice from someone else, he obtained some fish from elsewhere - Yorkshire Ouse rings a bell - and these were much more chilled out and settled in with no problems at all. Strange, eh?

It's probably too warm. My fish tank has tropical fish living in it quite happily and the heater packed in over two years ago! Room temperature plus a little bit of heat from the lights (I just have a couple of low energy lamps in the hood) keeps the water temperature up at about 24 degrees. UK fish will not like that at all!

I've also read elsewhere that if it's dark enough for perch to be happy no plants will grow, which is a recipe for trouble.

This occurred to me too. keeping native fish in an aquarium is probably a bigger challenge than tropicals fish. The water is more than likely way too hot. You can fit a cooler, or make one out of an old beer cooler, but then you will have condensation problems.

I'm not sure why lack of plants is such a big issue. I've kept tropical fish that you couldn't have plants with because the fish would just eat them as soon as you put them in, or because the fish were constantly digging in the substrate.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

It's only Perch and Piranha of the fish I have kept that lack of plant cover seems to upset them and they huddle up in a corner. Other species like Cichlids or most general tropical fish seem to adapt quickly to what ever environment that you provide. So I struggle to understand why Perch seem not to settle with out plenty of cover.
