I never go tench fishing without it :)

I particularly like the fact that it's really cheap!

You only used 2-3 pints? And not a huge quantity of maggots or crumb, but a fair whack of mini-pellets?

Not much of anything really Steve, a total of 3 pints of maggots (only used in feeders, not in groundbait), 2 bags of brown crumb, 3 pints of hemp, 3 tins of corn, 1 bag of micro pellets (less than a kg I think - 800g?) and a handful of mini boilies which I used at night instead of maggots (can't stand the eels!). Over 3 spots and 3 days. If they're there, you'll catch them, and I don't think any amount of baiting will make them feed on a spot that they wouldn't naturally feed on.

I only used crumb instead of proper groundbait because it's cheaper!

What I was thinking was that quantity of pellets, being dry and very high in protein and fat, probably contributed much more nutritional value than the other feeds used. I think I will just have to buy maggots and groundbait, I bought some big bags of hemp and pellets last year, so that's good.

Yes, very true Steve. But they were very small, so the fish had to work pretty hard to get any of them ;) It's the old high attract, low feed baiting that I started using for the bream but quickly found it to be very effective for bags of tench. As Steve B has said, though, not so good for the big loners.

With the honk of boiled hemp, I think I might be able to attract the tench out of the pond down the road and up to my front door - the neighbours must think I've got a cannabis farm in here!

I've been asked to recommend a local pub. That's easy, the Haywain at Brambling that you pass on the left just past the Jet Garage on your way back to the M2 from the lakes. It's the local CAMRA Pub of the Year and does excellent homemade food at reasonable prices. The liver & bacon and the rib-eye steak are outstanding.
