Top 5 Fishing Towns/Cities?

Could you tell me where the top 5 fishing towns/cities are in the UK? Is Aberdeen particularly good?

 

I'd be amazed if Aberdeen featured, though.

I've lived in a few different places in the south of the UK, and I think where I live now has to be there - Oxford.

 

I'd be guessing at the rest, but I would also put forward Reading/Newbury, and King's Lynn for the Fens.

I would only be guessing but Anderoo's call of Oxford & Reading sound good.

 

I suppose some of the towns in Norfolk, Sussex, Berkshire & Kent would also have access to plenty of good waters. To be honest I think if you live in the South of the country and are wiling to do a little travelling we are spoilt for choice

Nottingham is probably the number one angling town ,both historically and now ,and probably has more water per foot than anywhere else the only let down for nottingham is the lack of quality fish wise nor the quantity it used too have .

Aberdeen? Sounds as though there may have been some misunderstanding of the term "commercial fishing"...

 

In which case, responses might include Grimsby, Hull and Peterhead!

I wonder whether these inland towns with great recreational fishing nearby might be a bit confusing for the person who asked the question? I have a feeling that the answer he is looking for might be along the lines of this:

I think Steve Walker is probably right but if we're talking recreational fishing town/cities I think Christchurch would be in with a shout.

 

The Royalty Fishery (coarse and game)

Clay Pool (where rivers Avon and Stour meet)

The estuary (coarse and sea fish)

Then you've got the sea fishing on the local beaches.

I've often wondered this when thinking where i'd like to live when im 'older'!

 

Wrexham is certainly not in the running, at least for me. There are a few trout streams and the river Dee in the local area, otherwise though its into cheshire to find small rivers where you can stalk chub, target big perch etc. That said, if you like Grayling you're in with a shout of breaking some records here (just dont tell anyone!)

 

After visiting Oxford for the first time last year i decided it would have to be one of the best places to live (you're very lucky anderoo!). Lots of small clear streams, the mighty thames, canals, gravel pits, it has it all!

 

Salisbury also impressed me. I remember visiting a friend who was in university near there, walking 5 mins from the train station to where a small river (cant remember the name... nadder i think) Joined with the Avon, first peer into a side stream and what did i see... 2 perch approaching 3lb each sitting in a slack with 2 chub of around the same size floating in the current 10 feet behind them. You just don't see things like that around here! Fishing the Avon at Britford was also a fantastic experience.

 

Christchurch - had a holiday there last year. Again, a good variety. Saw some monster mullet in the harbour there, and some big ones way upstream in the stour. Didnt catch much but the area looks a big challenge!

 

Norfolk Broads/Norwich - Another nice area. Easy fishing for roach/skimmers, the sort of place you'd love to go to teach your kids the basics! that said some huge perch (had one 3lb 8oz) and pike in those rivers, with the added bonus of the Wensum for Barbel/Chub.

 

The area which i think of as the 'holy grail' of coarse fishing for me is the Newbury area. Alot of you guys are lucky enough to live near. Id one day just like the privilege to fish a nice stretch of the Kennet or another river in that area.

 

I know alot of people are in love with the game fishing here in North Wales though. The Valleys around Llangollen are breathtaking even for locals like me. A handful of Grayling caught most years over 4lb surely presents me with a fantastic challenge right on my own doorstep.

 

I really shouldnt be so greedy should I?!!
