This is the distribution map for the Black Woodpecker dryocopus martius They are expanding their range in north-western Europe, particularly in France and now found as far west as Brittany; so perhaps we will not have to wait too long.

Are they good eating?

My first Purple Heron was on the rocks (fishing, not in a drink you plonker) in the Indian ocean off Oman.

My second was just north of Aberystwyth in about 1995!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Purple Herons also nested at Minsmere in 2006 (iirc) but the nest got flooded out; unlike the Grey Heron they nest low down in reedbeds. Somerset Levels for my first one.

You may have to wait a while for a Black Woodpecker, all peckers are thought to be averse to crossing large bodies of water.

Ayjay

The English Channel does not seem to be an insurmountable barrier for this species as it has colonised the Danish island of Bornholm which lies a similar distance from the mainland as that between northern France and Kent.

LOL @ ziggy! is that what it is ziggy? weve got loads of those here, i just thought they were swans with anorexia.

Hi Dave, or they could be herons that someone painted white. We've only had them nesting in uk since 1995, they try to take over the herons nests, they make the weirdest sounds, bit like tigger from winney the poo.

We got a huge heronry with a hide, 5 mins up the road from here.

Chesters, LOL, didn't notice that in me pic, they coots like to rev it up a bit. :D

purple who the hell names these things lol looks a big dirty heron to me

Try yellow wagtails & grey wagtails, or hemp agrimony, neither a hemp or an agrimony, but a daisy family. Or ground ivy - a member of the mint family. This is why carl von linne (linaus) invented the latin based classification system.

You probably call it grim the collier, we call it orange hawkweed, but if i said Pilosella aurantiaca, we'd all know what plant we were talking about, wether we were welsh or bolivian.
