Salt water corrosion

Lent my mate an old bivy of mine for a spot of beach fishing. Got it out yesterday and found the zips have salt water corrosion on them and i cannot get them free.

I have tried boiling water, WD40 and have pick as much of the white bits out of the zips as possible.

Anyone got any ideas of how i can free them please, as the zips are in the closed position and thus making the bivy un-useable.

try vinegar ,the alloy swells in the zip the vinegar "may" with a soak eat it away enough to free it

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

If that doesn't work try some dilute alloy wheel cleaner, or kettle descaler. Both have phosphoric acid in them. I'm a wee bit worried that the acid might rot the fabric, but you have little to lose.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Sometimes WD-40 can take a bit of time to do the job. Have you tried again after letting it sit for a few hours?

I'm sorry but after many ,and expensive attempts to free " saltwater zips " I find it much cheaper to throw offending bag in the bin and buy a new one. Sorry but I speak the truth. B)
You are probably right on that score. The zip is probably brass and has probably become "de-zinctified" due to sacrificial corrosion.

...and this why I don't lend things to people. There's an assumption with many people that if you lend them something, you probably didn't really want it back or at least in the condition it was given.

if you lend 20 quid to a friend and never see him again it was probably a good investment
