Good hooks for Barbel?

Hi guys.

Im looking to go barbel hunting in a big way as soon as the new season starts but i was wondering if anyone could recommend a really good hook pattern and size for them. I will most likely be using a range of halibut pellets as bait probably between 8mm and 16mm sizes if this helps.

Thanks.

My current favourite hook patterns for Barbel are:

  • Drennan Super Specialist Barbel hook - An eyed, Teflon coated hook which is a good hook for mounting meat directly onto the hook. Very strong.
  • Fox Teflon Arma Point SSBP hooks - Short shanked with exceptionally sharp points which can be used over gravel without them quickly blunting. Good when using hair rigged baits.
  • ESP Raptor T-6 Short Shanked Hooks - also a good hair rig hook

Drennan boilie hooks, been using them for years and never had a problem with them. They are very sharp, strong and very reaosnably priced.

Thanks for the reply. What sizes would you recommend based on the bait i mentioned?

If you are fishing over gravel or a stony bottom I would look for a strong hook with a slightly in-turned point so it doesn't catch on the stones and blunt.

The Guru hooks look quite good, but I've not tried them.

I tend to stick with Drennan Super Specialist - they've never let me down. In fact with most things I'd go with Drennan/ESP gear - it all seems well designed and well made.

Where's the 'ANY' key?

Me to, so Ive never seen the need to use a heavier hook for most barbelling. Although i do when floodwater fishing and then just up it to Drennan Super Specialist Barbel hooks.

My favourites used to be the drennan starpoints in 6's or 8's but I can't get hold of them anymore so now I use either drennan or kamasan specimen hooks and they never let me down. A few anglers I know swear by Owner hooks and yes they are good but the kamasans and drennan specimans are easier for me to buy and work just as well. Same size used as before 6 or 8

Hair rig the meat using 6's but use the spiral meat holders to secure the spam baits and you'll never cast off your bait, when I'm using halibut pellet I like to bait band them with 8's

Im trying to find those spirals online while i'm at work and i can't find them anywhere. I've seen them before but can't remember where.
