I just hope our local commercial starts stocking them. A1lb 4oz fish that runs for 500 yards and takes 15 minutes to land would just have to be fun on the pole

Haha. Its just the old 'it was this big' syndrome again. "No honestly it was a 35lb roach mr reporter" Oh no sorry i forgot to take a camera with me but honestly IT WAS THIS BIG!!!."

Incredible that such a small fish should strip 500 yards of line, too. Good job the angler had a reel capable of taking that much line

The reality is

 

1. Piranhas fight a bit like perch of the same weight

 

2. They grow much bigger than 14" (shock - horror) I have had them to over 4 lbs and they certainly grow up to 8 lb.

 

3. They make delicious eating - especially baked. I have a picture of "a man eating piranha"

Radnor park pond or the peter pan pool, first place I ever fished as a young boy catching perch eels and small tench,if memory serves me well I am sure some of the 12oz tench used to strip hundreds of yards off my reel ! ( small pin with about 20 yds on ! ) anyway always will be a magical place in my memory so I believe it !!

Here is one I caught earlier

 

They ARE a little livelier than piranha - if a piranha fights like a perch of equal weight, the pacu is more like a tench - although I've never had a tench (or pacu) take 500 yards of line.
