Fishing Money Savers

Well fishing has got to be one of the most expensive sports, its cost really can be inhibitive, especially in these tough economic times! So I thought I would compile a list - along with your help of course! - Containing all of the money saving tips we could think of. Here are some of mine:

  • Dry Spagghetti Bait Stops - Also has the advantage of bio-degrading at a much faster rate than plastic!
  • Drennan Super Specialist Hooks - Very sharp and strong, just £1 for a packet of 10.
  • Daiwa Sensor Bulk Spools - High quality line at a very reasonable price.
  • Halibut Pellets - Roughly a third of the price of boilies and equally effective in the spring & summer months!
  • Hemp Seed - Probably the best Coarse fish ground-bait, even cheaper if you prepare it yourself.
  • Tinned Sweetcorn - Very cheap, yet effective bait, you can even drain off the water and pour it in to your ground-bait.
  • Ice Cream Tubs - Just as good as a commercial bait-box yet comes with free ice cream! :P

Well that's all I could come up with off the top of my head, I will look forward to hearing your suggestions! :D

Trap a few ferral cats and breed your own maggots !

LOL that is disgusting, reminds me of my beloved rabbit - she grew a tumor and was infected with maggots, the vet had to put her down :( .

Lots of cheap bait tips, eh.

Particle baits, bird food based as well as grains such as maize and wheat.

Trout pellets, even cheaper than Halibut pellets for loose feed.

A bucket - a great way of carrying lures which is more convenient than a lure bag/box.

Washing up liquid to sink line.

Peacock quill or Balsa dowel to make your own floats.

Braided mainline - cheaper than mono in the end!

Nothing wrong with your sentiments for saving money but I have to challenge the statement above. Fishing has to be one of the cheaper sports, unless you are driven by fashion to have the latest of everything.

The majority of my tackle is well over 20 years old but still works well, I don't need another rod that is 43micrograms lighter and will cast two feet further than the one I have already.

Forked sticks for rod rests. :)

Jumpers for goalposts.

No, hang on, that one's wrong!

Cheapest type of fishing - winter chubbing with bread flake - rod, reel, net, line, hook, split shot, forceps, bread, forked stick!

Biggest saving - live close to your fishing, I reckon I spend as much on petrol as I do on bait and tackle.

The times that one's got me out of trouble. I've also used small 'V' shaped twigs as bobbins, lose one every strike.

Good thread this, I wonder how cheap a days fishing could be? Assuming you had no gear and no bait to start, bought a day licence and float fished fished a free stillwater what would you need to spend?

It's never a 'six', let's put it back
