I bet it was found dead and the plonker who found it just hung it on the sign to wind people up.

 

 

You could be right - a lot of people seem to be jumping to conclusions here. It could just be that someone found it dead and thought the angling club should know about it - rather like finding a glove and hanging it on a fence.

 

Do we know anything useful about cause of death ?

Much too late in the year to be a spawning casualty, I'd have thought. But fish do die of natural causes. Or it could have turned belly up after being caught, mishandled and released.
