Has anybody here ever tried using the small pellets in a blockend feeder when fishing for barbel chub etc on rivers, as you would with hemp and casters? i was thinking of giving it a go on my next trip to the trent.

I would suggest that you would be better off using an open ended feeder if you are determined to use a feeder.

minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which

holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd

by the clean end"

Can i ask why you think i would be better off using a open end? its probably just me but i cannot see any major advatage! I'm talking about the micro pellets, around 2-3mm diamiter about the size of a grain of hemp. Also i think the current may wash the pellets out of an open end feeder before it got to the bottom? How would you use an openend? soak the pellets?

I,ve used them in a blockend to get a slow continuous leakage when carp/bream/tench and barbel fishing with success.

I usually combine a few pellets with a groundbait mix which releases normally but leaves the pellets in the feeder.

I've used trout pellet in an open end feeder on the Hants.Avon,it will work but there can be a problem with the pellets swelling and getting stuck in the feeder.

This is the main technique I use on the Ribble for Barbel. But you do also catch plenty Chub with it.

Try to use a good quality, hard pellet in the feeder amd you should'nt get problems with 'em getting stuck. I use the 3mm Hi-Betaine ones from Hinders. I fish with two of the same pellets, but 14mm size, hair-rigged on a size 7 ESP raptor.

Some people say pellet are'nt as effective in Winter but as long as you don't use the high oil content ones they are. Don't use a full feeder full of pellets in Winter, it's not neccesary and when you have some bait in the swin switch to a straight lead.

Off the shelf trigga boiles are a good complementary bait. Swap and change between the two during the session. One thing about the triggas though is keep hold of the rod or switch on the bait-runner 'cos when they do pick 'em up they really go for 'em.
