Things to do in London ?

I'm planning on going in to London this w/e and meeting my wife for the evening (she's seeing a friend in the day). I'm after any tips as to places to go or things to see / do that are not the usual touristy things. If I run out of inspiration I could pop into the tate modern, or one of the museums, but there must be something better ... ?

A bit of shopping in the Chinese supermarkets along Gerrard street, all sorts of wierd stuff there. dont buy the bundles of pretend money though, they're for funerals.

Palm house at Kew gardens is good.

Metal detecting the thames if the tide is right.

its pretty well dug out now and in my time you needed a port authority licence but you can find crockery etc on the surface etc.

i hated it you went home reeking of mud even when you wore full protection (those pretty yellow oilskins etc) shudder to think what else you picked up even in the late 70's it was still heavily polluted under the surface.

plenty of coins and i saw gold but never in my hole ,there was little on the surface so you dug down detecting every shovel full ,a cubic yard and the tide was back in and you filled it in again ,hard work!

some people sieved it as well ,lots of beads especially jet but not my scene ,its still called mudlarking for historical reasons it was pretty common in victorian times when the thames was in full use by eye then though no horse powered detectors unless they were plows

i tried it for a couple of months then went back to clean fields and roadsides (clean as in mud free i wasn't washing them for a living :D )

Yep that crossed my mind, but not sure what you can see now - it's a big building site and I would guess the public are kept at arms length for now.
