Commemorative plaque for Two Tone

Jeeeee-sus Christ!

This is a joke, right?

A commemorative plaque for an overfed gut-bucket that probably pigged itself to death.

It only serves to confirm that carp fishing must be fast becoming a religion of sorts and the modern day carp "specimen" is starting to resemble a Buddha-like deity (no offense intended to Buddhism, but he is a jolly rounded sort of fellow!)

Everyone to their own I suppose.

Our chief weapon is surprise

Just to set the record straight..... The original thought was to simply bury TT by the lake where it had lived. Some of the Mid Kent anglers (I was one of them) suggested that as it was a unique fish (britains largest freshwater fish) then it might be more appropriate to have it set up.

As time was short and the press and TV and many of the previous captors had been informed of the "burial" it was decided to go ahead with the placing of the plaque. The fish will be set up and donated to the Natural History museum for all to see and maybe some will marvel at the sheer size of it.

The remains of the carcase will later on be buried under the plaque.

These are the facts of the matter.

I attended the event, and found it to be very pleasant. Meeting of old friends, making new ones, lots of handshaking, but no silly sentimentalism, just a mark of respect to the British record carp.

What service was that Janet? I didn't hear any service.

Den, I heard about the service on the BBC from the link that Elton posted...

Two Tone....

I don't mean to mock, really I don't, but honestly, they are just asking to get wound up...

True, it was an astoundingly huge fish, but that's all it was...a fish!

I can't wait to see what Jason Manford makes of it. If you think that we anglers are making fun, then (unless he's under orders not to) wait and see what a professional can do.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

No I think the plaque was a nice thought and no problems with the get together. Must have been a bit of a blow to those who had/were putting in a lot of effort to catcgh here but never did.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I saw the title of this thread and guessed there would be a few "sniggering" posts.

As sportsmen (and women) aren't we supposed to respect our quarry and treat it in a humane way ?

Whats wrong with anglers showing their respect, I can understand why they chose to be there.

Nothing wrong with making light of it Cranfield.

And considering the way some other named carp deaths have been handled not only has this one been a lot more sensible (on both sides) but also no wonder why a lot take the pi$$.

Respect yes,deify NO.

I'm sorry if I seem unsympathetic to those of a sensitive nature about such things, but the fish has served the purpose it was bred for, and it has died of old age.

I'm willing to stand corrected, but I believe the fish was a triploid, and as such, served no purpose other, than to feed, put on weight, so it could be caught by those obsessed by such things. It couldn't contribute to the future stocks of the water, it was stocked as a 'plaything' to appease the egos of those that pursued it.

I'm glad I've never been infected by this sickness, it seems almost obscene to me.

John.

PS. Is the news of the death of the 'Black Mirror' to be the next big thing, or will the reports of a possible mass fish kill in the same water be considered, as/more important.

Hundreds of thousands are stocked as playthings - only 1 has ever grown so huge. I know the death of iconic carp can seem a bit over the top, but whichever way you slice it, 67lb is a truely colossal size, and I'm not surprised that the passing of this fish is being marked in some way.

John, not just the Black Mirror but everything in that lake, including a common that was even bigger, big bream, tench, pike... An ecological disaster.

The recent very cold winter and spring, followed by a hot summer, low oxygen and algal blooms has seen off very big fish this year. These ones grab the headlines but I'd be willing to bet there are many more closer to home, whether we know about them or not.

I would have never wanted to fish for the record carp but I think I will go and see it when it's been set up, just out of curiosity. 67lb...I can't even imagine it. The biggest carp I've ever seen is half that size, and was huge.

The Mere is different, it occupied a special, secretive little bit of folklore (and I'm no great fan of 'guesting' either), and the death of a whole lake is always a tragedy. Even the snails are dead and washed up along the banks. (Cemex forum has plenty of 1st-hand accounts.)

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
