Flying with reels in hand luggage

For some 20 years I have been flying to various parts of the world for my fishing. When doing so and taking my own reels with me, I have always carried them, complete with line and spools, in my hand luggage primarily to keep the weight of my hold baggage within the restrictions set by the airlines. This has never been a problem.

This August I travelled to Spain via Bristol Airport on my annual Comizo trip and I was made to strip all the line off my reels before they would allow me through security. Apparently the DfT have introduced new regulations making fishing line a security risk! 5 reels (including 2 big baitbaitrunners) - over 1000m of line, never used, dumped on the floor and binned. As you can guess I was well impressed.

Two points to this post:-

Firstly, as a warning to others who may fall foul of the new regulations

Secondly to see if anyone else has experienced this at either Bristol or other airport

Cheers

Paul

Ouch, thanks for the warning, and welcome to Anglers' Net.

Thanks for the warning Paul. I usually stick mine in the case. I suppose a compromise would be putting the spools in the case and the reels in the hand luggage (OK until the cases don't turn up when you do, as has happened a couple of times to us :o )

I suppose they think you're going to throttle someone with the line

When traveling to Thailand earlier in the year, I did see a guy sitting on the floor by the x-ray machines pulling line of a reel. Although I have not seen anything that says that you can not take line in your hand luggage its well worth bearing in mind.

I picked this up some years ago.

All my fishing tackle goes into hold luggage, because some paranoic security official somewhere is sooner or later going to see threats in practically everything anglers use!

That said, a #9 fly line together with a trout fisher's marrow scoop would make a good garrotting tool, so perhaps they have a point.

BTW I always divide the gear between two or more cases, matching things so that, provided at least one case stays with us, I will be able to do some sort of fishing.

Flying back from Australia new years eve after 9/11 and came across this as the reels and new spools of braid i had bought had to go into the hold instead of hand luagage ,Worst thing was the bag after being diverted from hand lugage to the hold was put on the next flight so we land and no bag Argh!!! ,i stay up till 10pm that night waiting and you guessed it the guy from Singapore airlines rings my door bell 10 minutes after dropping off to sleep after delivering my bag....Didn`t know if i should hug him for bringing my gear or give him a slap for waking me up :D Steve.

We are not putting it back it is a lump now put that curry down and go and get the scales

have I told you abouit the cruise control on my Volvo ,,,,,,,bla bla bla Barder rod has it come yet?? and don`t even start me on Chris Lythe :bleh::icecream:

To back up the inconsistency of the airport' policy - I brought Angling Times in the shop after going through security - complete with a spool of line!

Just goes to show they haven't really got as clue about what is a threat and what isn't.

Has anyone noticed any difference between airlines in their approach to fishing tackle?

I always have a battle with Easyjet over my rod tube. Easyjet Company policy is that fishing tackle is not sports equipment so I can't book it in as such. Staff at Bristol and Madrid Airports continually tell me it is obviously sports equipment so I should pay the extra. I can't get Easyjet to tell me why parascending and scuba diving are sports but fishing is not - seems a bit arbitary to me.

cheers

Paul

That is class - we should send this thread to the airport operators! :D

good thought provoking topic, just got back this morning from fuerteventura with 2 reels in my hand luggage no problems there or going out from Gatwick, have previously had forceps confiscated coming back ( rightly so ) as I forgot to put them with my other bits and bobs.in future will probably put the spools in the hold.
