Fishing terms you do not like.

Recommended Posts

I have been reading a few more angling publications recently then I would normally do mainly because I have been trudging around London to various meetings and they are slightly more interesting to read then the meeting papers when traveling on the bus or tube.

The articles are always fairly cliched affairs with the same phrases and terms repeated over and over again. But there is one phrase that makes my blood boil and want to do serious mischief to the writer or even worse an another angler who I may say it to me face to face and its the term

BAGGED UP

However it is used it winds me up, I dont know why but I just hate it and its made worse if it comes with the phrase "tonne up"

I bagged up big time, had a bagging session, bagged a tonne  I hate them all.

Oddly I do not mind anglers saying they caught a nice mixed bag of fish, but bagging aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Any angling phrases, terms get on your wick?

Stephen

There's something so horribly dismissive about referring to anything that isn't a carp as silver fish/silvers that really narks me.

In total agreement with that.

I totally agree with all the earlier posts and would add.

when asking someone what they caught and you get the answer in weight...rather than what fish they actually caught.

Lunker: it used to be a favourite of both weeklies but I've not looked at either of them for years so they may have grown out of it, or changed editors. I neither know or care.

I personnaly just hate anything written by Alex Bones, how he can find something new to say about a commercial 3lb carp puddle every month makes me depair. Although it inevitably means getting a new guru product every month, he annoys me.

Just got the new Imporve Your Coarse Fishing through the door so lets see...... oh look hes got a lovely 2lb common, well that makes a change doesn't it, and all you need is a tackle box full of guru's new leads, line and clips. Nice angling

Do love the underwater bit in the next but one article though, something different.

Bagged up doesn't really bother me too much. I do agree with the ''Silver Fish'' statement though! THEY ARE NOT ALL SILVER!!!! LOL

I don't really have many fishing terms I do not like, I do love the ''Zoo creature'' term Matt Hayes uses though when he is playing something of a good size, and the ''Its like a freshly mowed lawn'' when he catches a Tench :)

It does annoy me though when you get a ''Matt Hayes'' wannabe on the bank... The kind that gives you a dirty look if you dare sneeze on the next peg.... But will then answer his phone and speak to the wife so loudly birds in the Amazon flock for cover.... Then they lose a fish and insist on commenting on what just happened & how you should change everything about your rig.. What was it last time...

Ahh thats it: ''What you want to do mate is swap from Sweetcorn to Bacon, you will have a lot more luck with the bigger fish''... And I am like.... Oh I have some bacon in my socks from last Thursday! Thanks for the tip... And stop standing over the water booming out different baits while pointing and flailing your arms around and I might have a chance of getting the Carp back in the swim!

Plenty, cos I'm a right misery :)

- 'chod'

- 'social'

- 'geez(er)'

- 'chops'

- 'get on the [name of current bandwagon, usually a boilie name or rig]'

- 'syndi'

- 'pukka' (FFS)

- 'camo' (as a verb, GOD it annoys me)

- 'guesting'

- 'noddies'

- 'target fish'

- 'wrong 'un'

- describing any item of tackle by it's brand name, e.g. 'Armo' (just call it a bivvy eh?) or 'tournies' (IT'S A REEL!)

- 'this is a [insert name of boilie manufacturer here] lake mate'

- any name of a fish

These are usually combined into a single hateful sentence that despite my calm demenour, makes me want to beat the offending simpleton to within an inch of his unimaginative life with a copy of the OED.

'Alright geez, had a result last night, had ****face at 39.10, biggest in the syndi mate. Was 'aving a social, just banged out a chod and a few chops, camoed up the rig like, course this is a mainline lake mate so I got on the cell for this season, pukka bait, it's doin' the business down here this year, thought I might get my target fish once the noddies had ****ed off home like. Was in the Armo and the delk screeched off, rest is history, went 39.10 on the reubens. Next target is Pisswings, course that means doin' a bit of guesting, know what I mean?'

CHRIST

'Bagging up': I too dislike this term.

Small Silvers: I don't see anything wrong in calling Roach, Rudd, Bleak and Dace silvers because that is what they are: silver in colour; but I certainly wouldn't call Bream, Tench, Crucians, Barbel Perch and Carp etc. silvers because they are not (except when very immature).

Another thing that I dislike is some of the names for fishing tackle nowerdays:

'Elasticated Whip' : Why on earth did they decide to call a short elasticated pole a whip?? It bears no resemblance to a true whip which has a fine responsive bendy tip to absorb the lunges of a fish (and is not elasticated) and which you lift into a fish and swing it to hand and cast either under-arm, over-arm or sideways.

originally a whip was called a whip because it resembled a real whip and which you could use to whip in silvers using speed fishing; and an elasticated pole was what it says on the packet; an elastcated pole.

A pellet rod: Surely it is just a rod with a certain action that can be used with other baits as well; isn't it? can't you use it for any other baits besides pellets?.

The 'Zig Rig' : Why when you are using an anchored crust or another anchored bait (either on the surface or submerged) do people call it a 'Zig Rig'?

Who's 'Zig'? and why do people think it is Zig's rig? It has been used for centuries.

Happiness is Fish shaped (it used to be woman shaped but the wife is getting on a bit now)
