Fishing terms you do not like.

Well yeah Dales...but it does all depended on how drunk you where when you baggad off

 

When I lived on a farm and people stopped to eat, they'd stop for baggin.

 

It seems there are quite a few different meanings for baggin

Fish being referred to as 'Nuisance fish' if they are not the target species.

 

I sometimes fish a "big carp" commercial on a season ticket. Not for the carp but for the prime roach and tench it contains. The owner is a bit of a traditionalist at heart - because I use float tackle (one rod) he sometimes drops by for a chat- he says I'm the only chap on the complex who "fishes properly"

 

On one such occasion he stopped by, a carp angler on the next peg hooked a five pound tench on a boilie, wound it in, and yelled across to his mate "It's only a scum fish"

 

I have never seen a fishery owner so angry - he said if anyone had so little regard for fish as to call them "scum" he didn't want such an oaf on his water - banned the carpie for life on the spot, and told him to report to the office for his season ticket money back.

'Tiddlersnatching' when I'm actually 'Bagging Up' on 'Silvers'

 

I do use some of the terms myself on occasion but for some reason I only refer to small roach as 'Silvers', Rudd are not bloody silver and 'Skimmers' are usually too big to be referred to as 'Silvers' and at a glance I find it hard to distinguish very small bream from roach and hybrids.

My favourite term for small fish is 'Tiddlers', not used disparagingly though. At least I caught.

I dislike like the term 'Skimmers' but however, I do use it, as saying 'Juvenile Bream' is somewhat cumbersome and saying 'Silver Bream' is incorrect.

I use the term 'Tiddlersnatching' when I can't catch anything bigger.

I never 'Bag Up', I don't use a keepnet.

I do have 'Target Fish' but will never be disappointed when I catch something else.

I despise the term 'Nusiance Fish'. A Gudgeon is as welcome as a Tench any day.

I don't like being referred to as a 'Hoody'. As someone in the next swim disparagingly referred to me, not too quietly, to another angler as, 'that hoody over there caught a pike and didn't use a trace' followed by much tutting. For the record I was using Cheesepaste. I wear a 'Hoody' because its got big pockets and its warm.

I don't like the term 'Peg' when used regarding non-competitive fishing. Its a 'Swim'.

I don't like 'Bivvy'.

'Lump'. If you caught a 'Lump', go to the doctors. Otherwise you caught a big fish.

I want to catch 'Pisswings'.

This one gets on my wick! “Carp Puddle” – It’s not a puddle, a puddle is a small pool of water, typically rainwater that a 3 year old can usually walk through in their Thomas the Tank engine wellies!! And more often than not the “Carp Puddle” has most other course fish in which I would much prefer to catch!

 

That’s my 2 pennies worth!

I hate 'prime roach' - overused cliché.

 

'Bits' came from match reports on the Thames when feeder fishing would result in several chub plus an odd assortment of gudgeon, little dace, perch and roach, hence 'four chub plus bits and pieces' shortened to bits. It's slightly better than one term I saw used in reports of 'smalls'

 

'silver fish' came from Nene matches where pole fishing with maggots gave you a net of eels whereas hemp gave you roach hence the 'silver fish'. Similar on the canals where the better option from ruffe and gudgeon was again roach.

 

Can't stand use of word done as in 'It's done a thirty' - aaaarrrrrgggghhh!

Sometimes I think Carp Puddle is a good description, In the winter I often drive through puddles that are bigger then some commercials on the way to other venues. Other then the extra depth of "Carp Puddles" some do have a certain puddle look about them.

 

But the more I think about it the more I agree with you. The term "Carp Puddle" is demeaning to natural rain formed puddles which are more aesthetically pleasing.

 

Now I am with you on this as I now recall 2 weeks ago while Carp fishing, a chap who often fishes the same bank as me and who had not been down for a while due to struggling to catch said Carp said that he had been doing a "few baggin sessions at the local Carp puddle to restore his confidence, well you have to don't you" (Claverhambury Carp Lakes)

 

I am torn on this one as I find Carp Puddles funny and I guess that's the thing those who use terms we might hate love them.

I do find it entertaining to occasionally correct people fishing the broads who then remark about "muddy puddles" or "carp puddles" being man-made rubbish. The Broads are man-made!

Fish where you want and don't knock what others like, especially if you make blinding mistakes like that!

Actually some of them certainly do. And also they are sometimes gin clear and much harder to fish than the rivers. It all depends on the time of year and how they are connected to the rivers. Some broads have defined, free flowing channels eg Salhouse Broad, twin entrance but quite small, is usually very similar to the river conditions. Others are nothing more than a shallow silty dyke with little water transfer, eg The Trinity Broads that are virtually a separate ecosystem and will clear and colour in their own rhythm. Its one of the reasons I love fishing them, the variety.

I occasionally fish actual lakes because I like catching Carp and Tench, which are not in great abundance on the broads (well I can't catch them anyway lol).
