Hi all,

myself and scottca are planning on doing some night fishing for the first time this evening, what would you say are the essentials in equipment to take other than warm clothes and a torch!? Are there some other bits and pieces that can make the whole thing a lot easier?

we will not be using a bivvy, as only going until about midnight then coming home...

Cheers,

Stooby...

A flask of hot coffee or soup would be nice, plus don't forget an umbrella.

I would take the following as a minimum:

> Headtorches for playing fish and unhooking

> starlights/isotopes/betalights for rod tips unless using alarms

> Food and drink(usually hot drink)

> Net each in case of double hookup

> Rods, reels and bank sticks etc

> Scales

> Brolley to keep gear dry and maybe yourself if the heavens open unexpectedly

> Chair each

> Warm boots! It can get very cold at night by the river

> Spare pair of undies in case you get a case of the 'run away quicks' as a recent thread spoke about

and that is it for the essentials. You can take other items if desired.

Head torch is an essential in my book. Make sure you know your surroundings in daylight - don't want to end up in the drink. Be organised - I do alot of short sessions to midnight - I take a minimal amount of gear and always put things in the same place. Make sure you where you'l land, unhook and return your fish - and make sure these are accessible. Try to move around more deliberately so that you A don't trip over and smash gear or B fall in!

Maybe some nets, two way radio's and a fast car without number plates... :bigemo_harabe_net-163: :bigemo_harabe_net-163: :bigemo_harabe_net-163:

Seriously you have been given good advice, just keep warm and dry and well out of the water and have a great time. It gets colder than you might expect between about 3 and 4 and don't spook yourselves and do something silly.

Yes good luck with that Stooby and do report back. I'd be really interested to know what you took and whether you missed something that wasn't going to be obviously useful but, as it turned out, would've been.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

Well.....

Firsty, I have decided Night fishing is not for me

I arrived at the river later than anticipated and didnt really have enough light to get set up properly, at which point I discovered a handheld torch simply isnt adequate enough and a headlamp IS essential! trying to tie knots and set up with one hand holding a torch and the other one fumbling around just doesnt work with my sausage fingers!

As much as I thought I kept putting things in the right places, more often than not they would end up somewhere else just when I needed them!

After carrying way to much equipment across a field or 2, I realised by the end of the session I could have left the following items at the car:

1 of my rods

landing net

unhooking mat

most of my groundbait

scales

camera

a lot of my tackel

the reason being I blanked and didnt even get a bite, neither of us did!

Then the rain started, luckily I had an umbrella so kept myself and gear dry...

We then heard something the size of a buffalo rummaging around in the trees and bushes behind us which was a little weird and freaky, armed with a bankstick we kept fishing (admittedly a little on edge) and after a short while we decided that day fishing is the way for us and packed up! :D

Thank you for all the help and advice, and I am sure once better equipped I might attempt it again!

Cheers,

Stooby...
