Cheap bobbin

Recommended Posts

I know roland did a similar post recently on a bobbin for under £20, but it thought instead of starting a new topic within a topic i would make my own.

I will not pay any more than £5 for a bobbin, which is basically a colourful piece of plastic with a chain coming off it, granted some have lights in them but i still dont see why they are so expensive.

Anybody know where i can either buy a cheap one for under £5 or preferably can anybody tell me how to make my own.

I have a basic monkey climber which i made myself from a piece of plastic tubing, but it keeps catching on the line when i strike into a bite and it will do for now but long term it isnt really ideal.

Any info please, thanks

Cork from a wine bottle. It may take many bottles of wine to find one suitable for the purpose but its worth the effort ;) Insert womens hairpin/clip thingy into the top, this bit attaches it to your line.

Ram a snap-link and swivel into bottom (of the cork). This serves a dual purpose, you can attach a line/cord to it (remember to attach it to your rod rest/pod/stick) and also to change the weight/resistance by clipping on leads, very handy for varying tides on a river during any one session.

Wrap cork in PTFE tape for better visibility. You can also attach a light very easily either with tape, glue, whipping on a holder or drilling into the cork itself and creating a recess for said light.

Total Estimated Cost- £11

£10 for 3x bottles of wine. Drink responsibly, wait until you get home before opening.

£1 for ptfe tape from B&Q or can be found in a random drawer you swear you never put it in.

Hairclip is usually free from said woman (usually wife/girlfriend but your mum can also be used)

Snap Link Swivel found rattling around in bottom of tackle box.

Cord usually consists of whatever line you have lying around.

Just don't try to make all 3 bobbins on the same night you drink the wine. You end up with a headache AND crap bobbins.

I use a couple of bobbins like this but instead of the hairpin, I use a couple of map pins superglued into the cork body, less chance of damaging the line.

Well it might work on those Yarmouth slappers....but the tarts round here are a bit more expensive!

I'm guessing you're north of the river then mate ;)

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
