Makes me glad I don't breed valuable fish! My carp cost me next to nothing, but I still get enjoyment from keeping them :)

I think paying that much for a koi is mad. Mind you, a lot of people imagine their koi are worth more than they actually are - something that cost ten quid is not necessarily worth a fortune just because it's now two feet long!

I know exactly where you're coming from there. People often tell me some of my fish must be worth a few bob.

 

a) they're not for sale

B) they were grown from fingerlings and I don't put a commercial value on them

c) unless I fluked something special, I could probably buy equivalent ones for £30-40, anyway

Nice of them to list the road name to give would-be Koi thiefs a starting point. It's unlikely that he had only 2 fish in the pond.

Exactly! Also, it's a long time since I bought koi, but last time I looked some garden centres were getting away with charging as much for very ordinary quality fish as specialists were charging for basic graded fish. Most of us don't have a clue what we're looking at and are in severe danger of getting ripped off.

Its a bleeding minefield is buying Koi. You really have to know your stuff.

 

Used to have 'specialists' come in and scour the tanks/vats for 'premium koi' in a mixed batch of 50-100 ordinary koi.

 

"Not that one, that one"

"eh"

"the one with the 'insert unpronounceable japanese marking designation' on the anal fin"

"oh, THAT one! Here you go"

"Don't want it now, you've stressed the fish... it'll bleach itself..."

 

If you are one of these people, I reserve a special place for you. A very pointy seat with added spikiness!

It's a minefield buying expensive koi - high risk of buying something that an expert will tell you is nothing special. If you don't care what the experts think and just buy the ordinary fish you like the look of, no such problem!
