AnglersNet fish-in, Lower Itchen Fishery

Rusty

Recommended Posts

Rusty, I just remembered I still haven't sent you a cheque! Sorry about that. I'll sort that out now. I'm seeing Goosequill tomorrow, so I'll remind him too.

Does anyone know about LIF's big roach potential? Some big ones occasionally come out don't they?

(I'm still desperately clinging to the idea that I might one day catch a big chalk stream roach  )

The LIF certainly has Roach to 2lb+ but they are not caught very often (perhaps because they are not deliberately targeted that often either). The lower half of the fishery is slower and deeper and has many spots that look ideal for Roach but when you are only there for a day I always find it difficult to settle down in one spot preferring to rove around as much as possible. The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope. ~John Buchan

Fundamentally fishing is a philosophy. A philosophy of earth, and growth, and quiet places. In it there is a rule of life, a recognition of permanences. It makes you notice the little things of nature, wherever you may be. ~Bernard Venables

It would be magical to catch a good roach. I am very tempted to spend most of the day trotting, and then settle into a nice little glide somewhere for the last couple of hours of daylight and quivertip flake over mash, just in case...

I really hope you all have a great time which I am certain you all will, did consider going for it myself but my health can be to uncertain for me to commit even as far away as a week let alone a few months. So with baited breath I will await the reports of your outing to what sounds like a wonderful venue.

You paint a lovely picture of winter bliss.

However, despite my usually optimistic nature, I can't get last years image out of my mind - 5 swan loafers and a boiling torrent of brown water!

I have no idea what you're talking about. Isn't the Itchen always crystal clear, with dark shadowy fish ghosting across the chalk and gravel, between the lush green weed fronds? Fat, spotted trout lazily sipping down buttery mayflies, and shimmering grayling twisting at emerging nymphs? Scale perfect roach wallowing at the surface with a flash of silver and red as the warm sun drops behind the trees?

:D

Ignoring the poetry of hand crafted floats trotting gently down the swim as line softly peels of a PIN. What is a good method to try to get a Greyling of any size big or small?

Feeder fishing with red maggots anygood?

Stephen
