Ignoring the poetry of hand crafted floats trotting gently down the swim as line softly peels of a PIN. What is a good method to try to get a Greyling of any size big or small?

 

Feeder fishing with red maggots anygood?

All the grayling I had the other day in my post came on a feeder Dales so they do fall to it but I wouldnt have thought it was the best method with them being more of a chasing predator from what I have read (someone can correct me on that?). I was using half hemp and half mixed maggot with a trio of maggots on the hook (size 16 in the end). If i were to target them specifically with a feeder I would have liked to fish lighter but cant really get away with it in the stretch I fish. A good long hooklength seemed to induce more bites for me and a good feeding pattern. I imagined that the hook bait would rise a little in the water with the current pulling it up slightly and making it wave about enticingly for the greedy chub that never emerged. Of course float fishing for them would be my first choice on a day when I am not feeling quite so lazy :D

Trotted maggot or corn was by far the most effective (and fun) method for the grayling the one time I was there and it wasn't in flood!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

lol well if you get one that size be sure to tell us where it came from. I hope you do get one in the future as they are a lovely looking fish and fight just like a trout when on light gear. They are a real pleasure to catch. I can see me spending some time in the future with them in mind. Just got to battle through the trout to reach them :o

Reading your recent exploits with the lady of the stream has really inspired me to try to catch one and the Fish-In may well be my best chance, but with my recent fishing luck maybe I should not be aiming that high and should go back to basics. Catch a fish, any species and any size will do :D

Trotting is the best and really only way to target Grayling (unless you like fly fishing). Some philistines like to use a maggot feeder but it's not really cricket in my opinion...N

I don't care if it's not cricket, I'm well past caring about "sporting ethics" . I'm on a 4 blank session run and it's getting colder by the day. I'm starting to forget what a live fish looks like. the only ones I have seen for weeks and weeks are frozen and if it takes a gaff, seine net, spear, dynamite and heaven forbid a feeder packed with maggots I will give it ago :D

lol. Well I was supposed to be after chub (albeit with a smaller than usual bait) so you could always use that excuse when/if you get one so at least you maintain some dignity in the circles of hardcore trotters and pinheads lol. Or go around the corner and land one on the feeder and have a spare rod setup on light trotting gear and claim it on that. You wouldnt want the traditionalist to get wind of it and chuck you in! :lol:

 

I would love to catch them on my pin. Will most likely give it a go in the near future.

 

Any more talk like that Dales and I might start returning cheques :D

Dales, see how you get on trotting on the LI, provided the river isn't bursting you won't have a problem catching a Grayling! Plus, you will enjoy the experience much more! N
