I think Argyll's most recent posting on this thread put the whole thing in perspective. Nice one Jerry.

Took my wife up river today. We moored up at a handy bank, just where the fish finder showed loads of biggish fish, they turned out to be bream. Whilst we were there this bloke turns up to look at the river. He was dressed up in the full 'realtree' uniform, in this weather!! What we didn't realise was that within a few yards of us was a 'carp puddle'! Me and my Lyn were having a great day, bream to 4 pounds! Apparently this bloke was not catching. But curiosity eventually got the better of us, so we wandered off to have a look! All these 'realtree' blokes standing around, seemingly the dirtier the better. My wife couldn't believe what she saw! And the ammount of tackle deemed nescessary to catch a fish with! Incredible. If that were ever to become the only angling available to me I would down rods, for ever.

So your boat, fish finder and all things that power your boat don't count as fishing aids then Peter?

Pangolin:

I'd still like to catch a barbel or, perhaps, a zander from a river...

Where do you live? barbel are not, in my opinion a specialist fish, they do need specialist care though once caught. (main reason I hold a junior barbel teach-in every year for my local club)

If geographically possible I will take you barbel fishing if you like.

The boat is probably like your car Den, a means of going fishing. We even use the boat to go shopping or to the pub. As for a fish finder, well, we travelled 9 miles of river before we found a convenient spot that took our fancy, with the plus of having fish there. My Lyn has arthritis and finds fishing from the bank easier if its to be a long session. Yes, a fish finder is an aid to fishing, just as a plummet is, only rather more sophisticated. We are fortunate in that we have the luxuary of almost unlimited choice on our local river. It was a day up the river for Lyn, she normally only fishes on our local Broad. We weren't too bothered where we fished but as it was it all came together nicely. It was a day up river as much as anything, the finder actually showed more fish right at the end of our garden but a change is good.

Quite right Jeepster!

But what do we call anglers who take their fishing seriously, yet don't mind what they catch? No, not just yer ordinary pleasure anglers, but guys who are just as able, just as keen as a 'specialist', people who take whats there, what do we call them?

Hi Lyn, I'm based in Aylesbury, Bucks. I'd love to learn how to catch barbel. The great Ouse is not far away, but I wouldn't have the confidence to plan my own barbel quest at present. I don't even know if there are better and worse times of year.

You meet all kinds of animal on the riverbank.
