Ross on Wye

Pangolin

Recommended Posts

I will be staying in Ross on Wye for the weekend, in a couple of weeks time. I'd like a recommendation for a river fishery, where I could go after chub and barbel. I know the Wye at Bredwardine, but I'm sure I don't need to go that far.

You meet all kinds of animal on the riverbank.

I've stayed there a couple of times in July when I've booked a day on the Caradoc beat - mentioned by Teme man. There's a town stretch in Ross that I think is also about £5 per day. Locals do well there for barbel, but you need to know the river I guess. All I got was a couple of chub - but I was only there a couple of hours. There were anglers there who gave good advice on swims etc. And of course you could phone Ross Angling.

Thanks, have you got a telephone number for Ross Angling or for where I could buy the day-tickets?

Sorry - I've checked and it's actually Wye Angling 01989 566986. For the town centre stretch someone comes along the bank and sells tickets. You can just go and start fishing.

Just wanted to say a huge 'thank you' for the recommendation to fish the town centre stretch (Riverside walk). I had seven chub and two barbel: both barbel were doubles.

The photo is of the smaller one, at 10 1/4lb, as the larger one, 11 1/2lb, was caught just after dark, and the photo hasn't worked.

All the fish were caught using halibut pellet on a hair-rig, with ordinary running leger set-up. I was casting just to the edge of the fast water, about a quarter of the way across. These are my first ever barbel, and I will be going back there again!

What a result, you must be well pleased.

Cracking fish and well done. One of Mr Crabtree's favourite rivers. I'm very surprised though.......I thought that the otters had eaten them all B)

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!
