Councils And Number Plates

This article got my attention:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-11550580

"More importantly, that number plate is part of our heritage - not just for the council but for the town - we've owned that since the first number plates on cars."

But what do they actually gain from keeping it?

Makes me wonder what else they have of worth just sitting around, not earning money or providing a service to anyone.

its a bit like what use is art.

its strange when councils say their broke but can stump up in some cases millions for some scheme or other or rather than say "no" to some builder (like crest nicholson and farnham) spend years going back and forth pretending to "stand up" to some developer or spend millions on "consultations" (30 millions so far about the Stonehenge visitor center  )

Aldershot seems to spend vast sums "rejuvenating" the town by badly laying a brand new paved area every few years rather than drop the business tax a little to encourage business and actually make money rather than spend it on trip hazards the utilities will dig up as soon as its laid ,no amount of fake stone paving will get around the fact aldershot was (barely is anymore) a crummy garrison town ,now full of "fake" gurkas rather than real ones .

Aldershot maybe crumbling but the residents can spot Romanians ,Iraqis etc are not Gurkas despite their dark hue  Aldershot always was a tip ,fancy fake paving and a £ shop (not even a real poundland) doesnt change a thing.

what happens when the bloody mayor needs a new car or the council trough gets depleted they sell "council" land except it doesnt belong to them it belongs to the people

I'm from Rotherham, and our mayor had the plate ET1, I remember when the movie ET premiered, Spielberg was apparently offering ludicrous amounts of money to the council for the plate so he could have it on the car he went to the UK premier in. They didn't sell, and I don't know if they ever have.

Ridiculous- of course they should sell them, although perhaps they might do a better job than the council that sold the F1 number plate for what would appear to be less than a tenth of what it was worth!

This comment from the council leader annoyed me:

"If we got £400,000 - that's equivalent to £4 off the average council tax bill for a whole year for the council taxpayers of Northampton. But that is only one year - next year you can't sell the number plate again."

Or, it's a £400,000 investment in a modest infrastructure project which the people of Northampton can enjoy in perpetuity.

Or it's £400,000 trust invested to provide an annual scholarship, grant, prize, donation, council taxpayer lottery, whatever - from investment income.

Should someone so short-sighted be leading a council?
