Dales

Recommended Posts

Out of curisosity Dales, the "Good Uns" you have caught, what size were they?

Cheers,

Stu...

The best have been 3.01, 3.02, 3.03, 3.04, 3.05, 3.06 & 4 lb :D Plus a few hundred 2 pounders including a few at 2.15 lb :D . But to me any Perch over a pound is a good un.

In my opinion they are mostly myth.

There are plenty of big perch around these days. But all this talk of 4-5lb perch all over the place...well sorry to be a cynic and a misery, but unless you've had one on the mat or seen one caught and properly weighed, it doesn't mean anything!

4lb+ perch are enormous. 5lb+ perch are unbelieveably rare. A 3lber will be a fish of a lifetime for the vast majority of us, even if we fish waters that do hold bigger fish. A 3lb perch is a seriously big fish.

Don't fall for the old trick of a water 'containing perch to over 4lb' either. There are several gravel pits near me that claim to hold 'pike to 30lb+' because years ago they held one very big pike that got caught lots of times and has been dead for years...

I am sure that 2s and 3s are a lot more common than they used to be. But 4s and 5s...hmmm!

(And even if a lake or river does hold fish of that size - you still have to catch them!)

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

My PB perch of 2lb 14oz came from a very small and secluded local lake, supposedly club members only but not policed very well so every man and boy tries their luck when they think they can get away with it...

I caught it on a piece of string that had fallen into my bait box after I'd run out of maggots...coated in Liquid Worm and cast in with no hope of catching...just a desperate last cast before I gave up after a full day of blanking.

I have absolutely no doubt that there are much larger specimens in there...I've seen them, but failed dismally to catch any...

I also meant to say that of all the species in the UK, perch is the one that is by far the most often mis-weighed or not weighed at all. So much so that I'm afraid I now discount almost all claimed weights of big perch unless it's from someone I actually know and trust, or there is very good photographic evidence.

For example, arbocop's superb perch posted on here a few days ago - it looks every ounce of the claimed weight!

The 4lb 3oz perch on the Korum page linked to earlier...well, if I knew him and trusted him I might believe him...

I've seen it on the web, in the mags and on the bank. It's funny how many '4lb perch' actually weigh about half that

EDIT:

Have a look at the '3.8' here: http://www.homefarmfisheries.net/gallery.htm 5th row down:

Good post was saying the same thing with Steve on Sunday ,3lb Perch are still big very big in fact, it`s easy to get carried away with the captures of the Ouse/Thames/ wherever and think 4lb plus fish is the new benchmark .

Wetted my appetite now and hope to get out both days this weekend Steve.

We are not putting it back it is a lump now put that curry down and go and get the scales

have I told you abouit the cruise control on my Volvo ,,,,,,,bla bla bla Barder rod has it come yet?? and don`t even start me on Chris Lythe :bleh::icecream:

I think 3lb Perch are HUGE!

Does the weight of Perch depend on the ''Sex'' of the fish? We had a Perch of 1lb 3oz the other week, and then caught a Perch that was marginally under 1lb... Yet the one that weighed less was literally about a third longer than its bigger rival.

We did check the scales and they are digital/accurate. So I assume maybe its the sex/build of the fish that often counts? Not so much the size?

This may contribute to the ''added weights'' which people make up. They weigh one, it weighs 3lb... If the next one is larger in size it ''Must!'' be a 4lb-er!

Clearly not the case!
