What are these fish?

I'm at work at the moment on an oil rig and just outside the door as i type there is a huge shoal of fish just under the surfce and the are all constantly sort of rolling, its difficult to gauge there size but i would guess at around 8 inches in length, they must be of a reasonable size cos the gulls are sat in amongst them and the arnt even trying to catch and eat any of them? One of the guys reckons they are cod but ive never thought of cod as a shoal fish or as coming near the surface, what do you thing they could be? And before anybody suggests it unfortuantely we are not allowed to fish of the rig!! bloody shame though!!

Mackeral? They do that sort of thing alot. Maybe youd be better putting this in the sea fishing section as my knowlege of sea fish in this country extends to answering Mackeral to everything.

I have fished alot of charters for dogs and mackeral tho and have seen them do that sort of thing. Couldnt you sneak a line in or get them to change the rules. Or bribe someone. Tell them its your right to fish when not in work or something then get in touch with the court of human rights, and John Wilson. :)

MMMMmmmm nice idea but i cant see them being easily persuaded, i dont think they like the idea of me snagging up on valves and pullenig the open or closed or generally buggering them up as it would most probably cost them a lot of money, 10's of thousands at best millions at worst!!

Mally, do you have a standby boat assigned to your rig, if yes, get them to come over for some news papers or fresh veg or do a man overboard drill. There should be a way. Do the legs need a looking at by the painters? A quick hand line over the side with feathers on will soon show you what they are. You can make your own feathers using bits of plastic bag.

The main reason for not fishing on rigs is because the divers tend to complain when they get lost hooks in there suits etc.

If there are no Ganets working the area they could well be Cod or even a shoal of spur dogs.

Look out for seals as well, it could be Herring.

Keep us posted please.

Chears for the input alan, i really cant see a way of fishing for them, we do have a supply boat and i think they fish off it but i'm not sure, we dont have any divers now but we are still not allowed to fish. I might be wrong but isnt it law in the UK that your not allowed to fish off rigs? i think you can fish off them in the norweigen sector? I have seen a couple of seals over the last few days but i didnt see tham round where the fish were but what you said about the seals shoaling them up and then driving them to the surface makes sense, ive seen that on nature programs but it think that was dolphins?

Cheers

Mally,I'll accept that you probably can't fish for these fish, but what sort of tackle suitable for 8" fish can open valves on an oil rig?
