Obviously I have not used all of them, but my JW Avon combo (old style) is a decent enough rod for the money. It is a bit lacking in the quivertip versatility stakes in as much as you only get the one, which is why I went on to buy a Technium Specialist. This is a much better rod but you'll have to shell out more.

James,

If you get down to the shop and buy this months Improve Your Coarse Fishing magazine. They have tested 12 Avon Quiver rods and published the results in the magazine.

The Masterline John Wilson Signature Avon Quivers System came out tops in both action, versatility and value for money.

The rod can be used at either 11 or 13ft (with the addition of a 2ft extension section which fits between the but section and the first section. It now has 3 insert quivertips (I think the old version of this rod only had one quivertip) rated at light, medium and heavy. The heavy tip will be perfect for Barbel fishing on slow to medium paced rivers and the lighter tips will be perfect for Tench and Bream fishing on a stillwater.

I have caught numerous Tench on this rod and I have had no problems with the rod at all. I've not tried it for carp yet but will be doing soon. I will also be (hopefully) getting a centrepin to try a spot of long trotting on a river (either the Derwent of the Hull toward the end of the year). I will probably use this rod then aswel.

The 1.25lb test curve on the rob will quite happily launch a small method feeder out quite some distance.

The beauty of the avon rod is that it is versatile. Whether feeder fishing on a still water for Bream or long trotting on a river for Dace and Grayling, I doublt you could get a better suited rod for the money.

I have one of the John Wilson rods and I must say it's the best buy I have made so far regarding fishing tackle. If there was one rod I couldn't go fishing without, it would be this one.

I have recently purchased one of the new JW System Avon/Quivers and I have to say that I am very inpressed with it.

So far I have taken barbel to just over 10lbs on it and have used it for a variety of different styles both ledgering and Trotting and up to now it has done very well.

The only thing that you don't now get is the screw in tip ring that the old models used to have but for me this is counterbalanced by the provision of a decent reel fitting.

I am happy to recommend them...

  • 11 months later...

I've also have just got one of the Wilson Avon Quiver rods, really impressed with it, had some good tench on it so far but haven't had the chance to use it on rivers (only got it last wednesday) which is what i got it for. I've mainly been using it at 11ft but it feels good with the extention on. All in all a bargain i reckon!!

I go with everything Chris Playle says about the jw avon quiver. The rod is fantastic for the money, in fact it is the only rod I have used in the six weeks I have had it, the bite indication is superb, and its nice and light for stalking sessions on the trent. :):):)

I too agree with the comments already made regarding the JW quiver system rod... great value I got one for my son last year and he now uses it almost exclusively, he would probably lure fish with the damn thing if I let him.

I have pinched it on the odd occasion to go trotting on the river and it is a nice rod to cast with and light enough to hold all day.

My only problem is that I don't know whether to get one for myself or instead get a shimano hyperloop barbel power rod as featured in the latest AT.

I want an avon / float rod but don't particularly need another feeder rod.

Our perception of time as an orderly sequence of regular ticks and tocks has no relevance here in the alternative dimension that is fishing....... C.Yates
