my 1st multiplier

i have just bought a okuma magnetix multiplier (without a level wind) but have only ever used a multiplier on a boat just to drop down to the bottom and have never cast with one before

I am hoping to take it out for the 1st time this weekend, with my fixed spool just incase i fail to master it.

But i dont want to waste too much fishing time dealing with birds nests or lose a thumb, so have been scouring the net for any articles or videos with a bit of info to get me started, but keep coming up with mainly info from yanks and australians about small bait casters rather than shore fishing,

could anyone point me in the right direction of any articles that might help me learn a few basics

cheers

mike

i tried one in the late 60's with limited success (unless you collected birds nests) i then last year bought a 7HT which i found surprisingly easy to cast (even easier i bet with your mag brakes) unfortunately now the reels are so damn small the retrieve takes ages so i sold it and went back to fixed spool.

what we need is a multiplier with a hoofing great gearwheel that retrieves as fast as a fixed spool.

i can retrieve and bait and recast and settle the fixed spooled rod faster than that poxy 7ht with my hands in a blur still reeling in :(

Saw an Avet for sale a little while ago with 8:1 retrieve - wonder if that would do the trick?.

Put the mags on full and don't try blasting it over the horizon!

Just take it easy and keep one eye on the spool and one eye on the lead - if the spool starts to nest whilst the lead is in the air put your thumb on it - if not apply your thumb upon splashdown!

I should say that the Okumas do have a reputation for being a bit "fast" so if you are really worried put heavy weight oil on the bearings.

Unfortunately they don't make that one any more but, the little SX 5.3 is a 5.3:1 retrieve and the MXL a little bigger (but smaller than a Mitchell 600!) wth a 5.8:1 retrieve. They have the option of mags as well. Not cheap but I use an MXL and a JX for boat fishing. They are superb, small and light.

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

it depends what its turning, an 8 to 1 turning a big marlin reel will wind in a hell of a lot more than something the size of a 7ht ;)
