I started going off topic in the If you could fish for only one species of fish? thread and discussing Pike and this got me thinking about fish with fearsome reputations. From watching some of the recent Robon Green and Jeremy Wade shows, it does seem that they may exaggerate the ferocity and savagery of some of the fish that they encounter. So I thought I would ask a couple of questions around this topic. I'm not thinking of the most powerful or strongest although this may go hand in hand with being the most ferocious. I'm more interested in the ones that have a reputation deserved or not for being fierce.

 

You may like or not to answer one, all, a few or none of the below :D

 

1. What do you think are the UK's most ferocious fresh water fish?

 

2. What do you think are the UK's most ferocious salt water fish? (Maybe should be in the Sea fishing section, but thought keep the topic together)

 

3. What do you think are the worlds most ferocious fresh water or salt water species?

 

4. What is or are if you have a few candidates the most ferocious fish you have caught?

 

5. Are there any species that you think have a underserved or over rated reputation as fearsome?

 

It might also be interesting if you have had experience with a "bad ass fish" from a species not known for a particularly ferocious nature.

Depends on how you define ferocity.

 

Lined Tiger Fish, the smaller cousin of the Goliath, is pretty ferocious in the way it attacks a fish bait.

 

You do get spectacular bite-offs with this fish - not by the fish you are playing, but by its mates.

 

What happens is that the fish you are playing tries to eject the bait, which slides up past the wire trace and onto the main line as the fish rushes about. Another fish then muscles in, grabs the bait, and bites through the main line in the process.

 

In the very clear waters of the Okavango we had a front row view of this at least twice - and it probably explains another half-dozen bite-offs where we didn't see exactly what happened.

 

Oh, and Norma and I did actually catch some tigers - 24 between us up to 16 lb.

 

Such bite-offs happen with sharks also - at least twice with porbeagles whilst we were fishing for them a year or so back.

 

All-round ferocity? You could line up the usual suspects for freshwater. Piranha, Payara, Peacock Bass, Trahira, Lined Tigers, Goliath from the tropics, Ferox and Pike from the UK

 

Various sharks, Barracuda, Barracouta, Trevallies and Tuna in the oceans all hit a bait very savagely, and nearer home, what about mackerel :) ?

 

...and how savagely does a dace attack a caster ?

UK Fresh- I'd think Zander, however I've never caught one. Yet...

UK Salt- Have caught Bass and they do seem quite 'bitey'(I'm avoiding putting sharks on this list)

World- TigerFish definitely look the part!

 

Most ferocious I've caught has to be Pike. Not the Big, well behaved ladies, the snappy bucking bronco Jacks iro 7lb. Big enough not to be scared of you and to let you know it.

 

In general, Pike have an over-rated reputation. I've found that the bigger ones are just as docile, if not more, than say, Carp. Maybe because the fight tires them more?

 

Unlikely Bad-Ass Fish? You might laugh but I've caught a Ruffe with a real big attitude. Obviously not ferocious to me but put up a heck of a fight for its size (thought it was a good roach at first) and was determined to spike me... repeatedly...

Also, in my tank, I've a vicious Synodontis who has demonstrated his mildy venomous spikes on me several times (hurts a suprising amount). In a seperate tank I have the most belligerent Neolamprologous Brevis ever, 2" long at most but rips hairs clean out of my arm the little sod and has actually managed to get a tooth hold on my skin a few times.

That's weird with the Pike, I have tended to experience the same thing. The bigger they are generally the better behaved they have been. But the ones below 9lb have more often then not fought harder and seemed to fit the bill as fearsome predator better then the bigger girls.

From UK freshwater, it would have to be the eel for me. A real handful on the bank and having seen how hard a good sized one can bite on a disgorger, I wouldn't put my fingers in ones mouth.

For me its got to be the Carp they will destroy most beautiful lakes and turn them into muddy pig puddles now that's ferocity the destruction of everything in sight including frog's, toads, newts and their eggs to only mention a few of their preferred nibbles. They are the cause of swims being cut on the banks, the unnatural addition of wooden platforms, come on what other fish ferociously destroys so much in and out of the water?
