With the uk's debt reaching £10tn i thought i would find out what £1tn looked like to get some perspective on it but the nearest i could get to it was $1tn-

Far be it for me to say 'I told you so', but a while ago, I said the only difference between Iceland and Ireland was 1 alphabetical letter and 6 months.

OK, it took 18 months. The Irish economy relied upon inward investment, which was fine all the while their cost base was the lowest around. Their experiences with Dell, which opened up on Irish taxpayer's money and low taxation levels, upped and moved all it's production to Poland and took 2000 jobs - and a lot of ancilliary support jobs with it. It practically decimated the town.

 

Sadly, it's not just Dell.

 

In the UK it has prety well wiped out the large scale print industry - aided and abetted by some idiotic union practices (of which I am ashamed o say, I supported).

 

What has gone on only confirms what I said about Northern Rock before it came off the rails, If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Whose 'trillions are we talking about? American trillions or British trillions.

 

In the US one trillion is 1,000,000,000,000 or 10²12

 

In the UK one trillion is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 or 10²18

 

We humans have problems getting our heads round numbers when they get so big, but let's try and put one UK trillion in perspective.

 

734,099 Days have past since 01/01/0001

There are 86,400 seconds in a day.

 

Therefore 63,426,153,600 seconds have passed since 01/01/0001.

 

10²18/63,426,153,600 = 15,766,366.76

 

So £1 trillion is the equivalent to £157,666,366.76 for every second since 01/01/0001.

i remember when a million million was a trillion now its seems to be a junior 1,000 million.

 

when UK gov mentions a trillion is it a million million when they need the sums stated to be low and a 1,000 million when its needed to be high?

 

IE is tax intake quoted in thousand millions but for an excuse not to fund something its a million million? (not sure if that came out right)

I used to work for the Reserve Bank of Australia and I was frequently in the vaults where I saw pallets of notes, many of the pallets holding $100 bills. Certainly billions of dollars there. However, the impressive thing was when we did a gold check. The gold was kept in a pneumatically operated compactus and as we opened each bay 1800 x 400oz ingots became exposed and there was a lot of those bays. Much of that gold belonged to Britain, but it was shipped back when one of your chancellors sold all of your reserves to support the value of the pound. It was a major operation to move that weight of gold in such a short time and the centre of the city was closed so that the trucks carrying it could go against the traffic in order to take the very shortest route to the airport. The amazing thing about gold is that it seems to reflect more light than shines on it. I had never seen gold before I got that job and it meant nothing more to me than the monetory value it had. However, having seen it in quantities and that incredible glow that emanates from it, I know exactly what "Gold fever" is. Unfortunately that branch is now closed and the gold has been moved elsewhere in Australia so I will never have the opportunity to see it all again.

 

Obviously the trillion you mention is the universally accepted trillion these days. ie a million millions. When I was a kid, that would have been a billion, but the so called American billion, ie one thousand million was adopted around the world some years ago.

I guess that it depends on whether it is British or American buses!
