The end is nigh for livebaiting nationally!!!!

Been fishing today and when I got home there was letter from DEFRA. Cutting out all of the cr*p, the Sec of State has banned Live and Dead Coarse baits from use in the Lake District.

I’m surprised that no one else has posted this information. Surly, I’m not the only one to have received this notification I’m I?

Mark my words, THIS LABOUR GOVERNMENT WILL BEFORE IT LEAVES OFFICE, BAN LIVEBAITING NATIONALLY.

I'll post the full letter tomorrow when I’ve scanned it.

Unfortunately a ban on one national park will lead to a ban on another, e.g. such as the Broads. Got to say that I don't consider it a Labour Party thing, more an interfering Civil Servant thing. The whys and wheres of this one, especially the ban on dead coarse baits, has me a tad worried. What has me more worried is that said interfering civil servants appear to have ignored logic on this one.

Yes Phil, you have picked this one up ahead of me and also probably most other folk as well. If it was in Tuesday's AT then thats why! Reckon A.T. has gone downhill since its 'improvement so don't even bother to pick it up for a snatch browse in WH Smith's lunchtime browsing library now.

Thanks for the info.

The letter I received

ENVIRONMENT AGENCY: NORTH WEST REGION FISHERIES BYELAW

I am writing to inform you that the Secretary of State has now confirmed the

Environment Agency North West region fisheries byelaws.

In reaching this decision the Secretary of State carefully considered the case put forward

by the Environment Agency together with all the objections received, in particular to

byelaw 18 which seeks to regulate the use of angling baits on waters in the region. The

Secretary of State noted that the aim of the restrictions on the use of live and dead baits

was to protect and conserve a number of rare fish species in the Cumbrian lakes.

The Secretary of State took account of concerns expressed by many of those who

objected that the ban on the use of live and dead bait at certain times and in certain

waters would place unreasonable restrictions on pike anglers, and that in their view, these

angling activities represented no environmental threat, nor was there any evidence to

support the Agency's proposal for a ban.

After careful consideration, and in view of the Government's responsibility to maintain

biodiversity, the Secretary of State concluded that it was necessary to take measured and

appropriate action to minimise the risks to the rare fish species in the Cumbrian lakes. In

addition, the Secretary of State decided that the proposed ban on the use ofliveand dead bait was supported scientifically and was also a reasonable and justified response to the

risks posed by the introduction offish species not native to the specific waters to which

the byelaw will apply.

The Secretary of State recognised the concerns expressed by a large number of objectors

that the introduction of this byelaw was the first step in banning all forms of angling.

These concerns are unfounded and I have been asked to stress that the Government has

no plans to ban angling.

The Secretary of State noted that, in order to be fully effective, the Agency must ensure

that sufficient enforcement activity is devoted to these byelaws. These measures must

also be supported by an education progmmme to explain the need for the prohibitions on

the use of these baits and that alternative baits do exist for pike fishing. It is also

important that the Agency works closely with other relevant local and national bodies to

put in place measures to protect the lakes from further degradation.

Yours Sincerely

Richard Cowden

Its bad enough for the Pike angler, how bad is it for the Perch angler, you dont catch many Perch on Herrings & Sprats.

This became law on the 26th, on the day most people recieved the letter (29th) the EA were in the Lake District checking people's baits.

How long before its country wide, then what next?

Scott.

Dear Phil

I have not been sent any letter and myself and Anthony Jolley sent in our arguments on the subject from the National Anguilla Club.

I am taken back by this as it is the first I have heard of it coming into effect.

Scott, this is bad news for the eel boys as well....as well you know my friend....I feel for you and the others up there fishing away after your pike et all.

If this came law on the 26th July, why have we not heard from the likes of the SAA on this crap judgement.

Do they know about it?

One last thought Phil, have you mentioned this to the SAA as yet or not.

Thanks for posting here Phil, I shall be watching this post closely.....

Yours With Respect.....

Steve.

Dear ALL

I cannot believe that this thread is so so so quiet.

Angling has just taken a massive blow to its future and the response is this......no wonder angling is gonna be under such pressure in the coming weeks, months, years.......years if we are lucky, at this rate.

As an eel angler during the summer months, I have now effectively been restricted in my anging targets in the Lake District. Oh yes, I could use worm or maggot but anyone who has fished these waters knows that it now ain't worth the journey to these lakes to fish.

I suppose the less fore-sighted pike anglers will just assume that they can AT LEAST use spinners, plugs and jerk-baits.....if this is the case (and I know many many pike boys in the PAC who are NOT of this ilk and voiced their opinions on the proposed ban with much good and relevant argument during the consultation period) then they are the jerks, for they do not see the big picture.

The perch boys can still use the options of plugs and spinners but they were sunk by the Perchfishers group who niavely announced that they were non political when predator anglers were pushing for some form of unity in the specialised field we angle in.

William Hills opens at 10.00am tomorrow morning.....what are the odds on who, where and how quickly this fire will burn.

Regardless of your personal opinions on livebaiting and deadbaiting for predators....you should all be voicing pro-all styles of angling in the political arena.

I hope that Phils thoughts regards livebaiting being banned by this goverment are not founded.....if it is, then all you out there who did not respond against this proposed ban are guilty of selling angling into oblivion....cos once this fire starts to spread, it'll rush like nothing you've ever seen.

Before I leave this for now......I want to offer my thanks to those who did get involved and tried to fight this non-sense ban with sensible debate. Those thanks are directed mainly at the PAC committee and its membership. Thanks for the time and effort guys/gals.

On behalf of all pro-all styles of predator angling....

Yours With Respect....

Steve.

General Secretary for The National Anguilla Club.

The EA collared a bloke at 2am on Monday morning - the 29th. They took all his coarse deadbaits off him and he is now waiting to hear if he is to be prosecuted. When he got home his letter from DEFRA arrived informing him of the change in byelaws!

If the EA can police this new byelaw so vigorously why couldn't they manage the same level of policing for the original byelaw? If they had there would have been no need for change.

There must be more to this byelaw change than is being admitted to. And that is a national ban on livebaiting. This doesn't come from the present government, it's been on the cards since the EA began to unify fisheries byelaws. Now they have got their wedge in all they have to do is tap it home slowly. Cynical, moi?

I'd like to add to Steve's thanks by mentioning the SAA committee who did a lot behind the scenes while PAC fronted the operation.

Where we go from here is anyone's guess..... unfortunately.

Peter, just to say this is one civil servant that does not agree!!!

It really worries me that after all the efforts and arguments put forward to stop this from happening it has gone ahead anyway. Where is it going to stop.

I know one thing, Matthew & I had always wanted to return to the Lakes just to go pike fishing. We won't be going now. I wonder how many other visitors Cumbria will be missing out on? It is just begining to recover from foot & mouth and now the government do this. Talk about kicking someone when they are down.

Yes Phil, I to,wonder how long before it becomes a national thing.

Where do we go from here?
