The end is nigh for livebaiting nationally!!!!

'eelfisher':

The perch boys can still use the options of plugs and spinners but they were sunk by the Perchfishers group who niavely announced that they were non political when predator anglers were pushing for some form of unity in the specialised field we angle in.

I'm appalled at the attitude of the Perchfishers, a group I helped formed. I left a couple of years ago when there was some political infighting. I was then asked to re-join, which I agreed to consider. However, when I heard they weren't going to join the SACG, again because they were "non-political", I decided enough was enough.

I agree that this ban could be the thin end of the wedge. I'm not as pessimistic as some as I don't think that livebaiting will be completely banned for a few years yet, except in national parks. However, it's almost certainly just a matter of time until a complete ban - unless we put up a fight.

It seems that the conservation lobby has got its way. As a conversationist myself who runs a nature reserve, I'm normally on the green side of the fence. However, this was simply bad science. I get the impression that the issue had already been decided in advance, and the "consultation" was just going through the motions.

It never ceases to amaze me that the EA has the time and resources to clamp down so hard on anglers and to invoke the courts to apply what frequently appear very draconian actions in terms of fines and confiscations etc.

Bait misuse and bylaw infringements are obviously some of the most heinous crimes one can commit in this country, certainly when compared to vandalism, dangerous traffic offences, theft and assault.

Does it ever seem to others that anglers are easy targets?

obviasly the time for the more clever people out there to invent a realistic looking battery powered "living fish" type bait complete with death rattle :) it would corner the market ,and dont forget the bloke that mentioned it

"If this came law on the 26th July, why have we not heard from the likes of the SAA on this crap judgement."

Possibly Steve because we in SAA, just like everone else, had the letter to us posted on the 26th July.

It came to me and was sitting on my desk this morning (Wednesday 31st) when I returned from a funeral in Ireland. I have spent the afternoon writing a piece for the next New Specialist Angler magazine on the topic and brushing up a response to DEFRA and EA NW for selling us down the river. Then I got on with some club business and have just dropped in here before completing the piece for NSA. SAA will not normally publish its first response on any websites. In this instance the first response will go to DEFRA and EA, where we hope it will do most good.

The EA NW are quick enough to pounce on anglers now, even when the anglers concerned cannot possibly know of the change, but they are still doing nothing to remove from the water courses those fish they "claim" are causing the problem.

NW were not supported by EA Bristol in their arguments and I am amazed that Elliot Morley has been suckered like this. He used the S&FWFR to justify the decision before he made it and I believe has been sitting waiting for the summer recess to publish his decision so that he and DEFRA could avoid as much flack as possible.

For those that are interested his address is;

Elliot Morley M.P.

Secretary of State

DEFRA

Nobel House

17 Smith Square

London SW1P 3JR

Do not blame the civil servants. This was proposed, or at least accepted, by anglers' representatives on the NW EA board. You can guarantee that they do not fish for pike, eels or perch.

Perhaps next time PAC, SAA or one of the other angling organisations asks their members and other anglers for support, even more will take the time to object.

Good point dreamer - and haven't Blair and Blunkett been bleating recently that our prisons are overcrowded and so they have found it convenient to "decriminalise" some crimes to ease the burden on prisons? (and incidently to appear to have "reduced" the crime rate). Live or dead baiting is obviously not a candidate for such decriminalisation.

I wrote my letter of protest to Morley back in November (unacknowledged - probably "lost")

Even lifelong Labour supporters are beginning to understand New Labour is the enemy of the countryside and of country life. (Read some of the more rational posts on the fox-hunting thread). This hostility to rural life comes partly through ignorance ( look at the F & M shambles) and partly through the malice engendered by the politics of envy. They came for the Gypsies - I wasn't a Gypsy, so I did nothing

They have come for me - why doesn't someone DO something"

Just substitute pistol-shooting, hunting, wildfowling, game shooting, livebaiting, keepnets, etc etc in the above scenario and you will see Scott is right

Question,

I would like to respond to your Government appearant regulations for the sake of regulating. As curious as it may sound, international comments often get more than there fair share of weight. (At least it is true in the medical field.)

I have copied from Phil's post, "a number of rare fish species in the Cumbrian lakes."

What are these species?

How can deadbait affect/effect these species?

Are we talking about known diseases not already introduced in the area?

Are deadbaits defined as "dead fish" or any unaltered creature (i.e. a mouse)?

Phone

Chesters1, there must be 25 - 30 different lures in 25 - 30 different sizes, with 25 - 30 different rattles, in 50 - 100 different colors, with 10 or more battery sizes.

You have re-invented the wheel.

Folks

This byelaw change has NOTHING to do with the Blair regime.

The NW region sought to ban livebaits across the entire region shortly after the EA was formed. The reason gived being to protect rare species - which exist in only so many lakes.

Pike anglers (predominently) managed to get that proposal shelved - although we were assured it hadn't been dropped forever. It came back in its new guise and they were determined to get it through this time.

Failing to consult pike anglers their views at an early stage was one of the tactics used to speed its progress.

The blame does indeed lie with the REFERAC (or what ever it's called) members. I spoke to one purely by chance ( I knew him but didn't know he was a member) and he more or less told be I shouldn't have been interfering as the proposal made sense and wouldn't affect many people!
