Wingham Fish-In 2011 dates

It will be very interesting to see how my tactics I use for large Broads Bream translate at Wingham if I get to go. Large for me is anything over 5lbs btw.

I have a feeling I may only catch Tench from the above comments. What a shame lol, not many Tench on the Broads so a novelty fish for me.

 

I will certainly be keen to hear how you get on if you get a place, guests at the AN Fish-Ins can always bring new ideas and tactics with them and so I would not be put off by trying your "style" of fishing but Steve, Terri, Glyn and a few "Wingham Veterans" will be about to give out tips and pointers if guests want them.

 

Steve sends out a questionnaire to potential guests in advance of sorting everything out and I would urge everyone to fill it out in detail. He normally asks about which species you wish to fish for and some bits about tactics and he will use this information to try to give guests a swim that suits them. So if a float in the margins is your thing, let him know and he may be able to accommodate your style of fishing.

 

If there are not many Tench on the broads, you could be in for a treat if you get a place. Wingham Tench grow to quiet a size and don't half pull.

Yeah, I'm almost as excited by the prospect of learning new and better ways for me to fish as about the fishing itself! Will be strange fishing with other people but very cool to put a real live face and voice to the text.

I seriously doubt anything will be learnt from me however.

 

It will be a major change of venue for me. Some broads are big but mostly inaccessable except by boat so I mainly fish the Rivers. Also, most of the stillwaters within reasonable distance are very much smaller than Wingham coarse lake, about 20x smaller mostly!

The formation of them is very much different too with broads rarely being more than 5-6' deep and often very silty.

Incidentally, Wingham coarse lake is a bit bigger than Salhouse Broad (32 acres), my favourite broad.

Yeah, I'm almost as excited by the prospect of learning new and better ways for me to fish as about the fishing itself!

 

This is what I enjoy most about the fish-in, I always learn something from talking to people, and the social side with the BBQs and informal chats is really nice. I think this year's fish-in will be a bit special in terms of fish too, this early, warm spring has really kicked the lake off. I remember fishing there the first weekend of May last year and it was still below freezing every night, it was so cold! I took a bottle of Champagne to share with Rich as a toast to the new season (a la Passion for Angling) and I can remember us sitting out in the dark drinking it with a heavy frost forming around us freezing to death!

 

This year though, there's none of that nonsense. Who knows if the bream will turn up (they may well do) but the tench fishing should be really good.

 

Given the interest I very much doubt I'll be allowed to fish, but I hope to come along for at least part of it for the social side.

Like yourself if i get to go i will be happy catching tench and whatever else is in wingham , i think for me also as a first time at wingham that my best bet would be to make the most of it and just catch fish whatever they might be .

As a match angler i definitely dont specialize on one target fish and would leave the big bream to those who are dedicated and skilled at it , the same as big carp or barbel etc .

But what ive learnt about fishing for many years is that it continues to throw up surprises and in a recent match on a tench & carp water i managed a pb bream of 9lb 11oz on the pole at 8m fishing for f1's , wingham is a million miles away from being similar to the match venues i fish in the way the fish behave because its a totally natural water and the fish dont have to compete for the same baits ie pellets that are thrown in by every match angler, so for me this kind of fishing has to be like the fish are reverting to type and they each have there own species characteristics which means adopting a fishing style to suit each one .

but having said that i still think that by fishing an all round feeder or float strategy well will certainly catch the tench and everything else but being that there are so few bream in there i think on a personal level that even over three days there is still an outside chance of me catching one , but out of the whole of us i think that someone or maybe two or three of us will catch them , you just never know whats gonna happen and like dales said it will be interesting to see what us newcomers can bring to the table .

Absolutely right! Technically it isn't hard fishing, you don't need top secret baits or the latest wonder rigs, all baits and methods work and I think people will do better if they stick to what they're best at rather than try to fish in a particular way that they're not used to. The only really important things at Wingham are accuracy and, if you're fishing close in, keeping quiet.

 

Accuracy is the key really. The topography is quite bewildering in places, so time spent with a marker rod or plumbing rod before starting to fish is never wasted. I would urge people to really take their time with this and (as tempting as it is!) try not to be in a rush to get fishing. Talking to members or Steve and the baliffs who know the swim is a good idea too. If you put your bait and your rig in the right place at Wingham, you'll catch fish, regardless of what method or bait you choose.

 

Finally, if a certain spot isn't producing any bites, I would abandon it and try a new one, maybe at a different depth, or a different type of bottom, or whatever. Quite often a great looking spot simply fails to deliver. This is also a good reason not to put too much bait in until you know there are fish there.

 

Depth can be important, what will all the bars and humps and depressions. If using 3 rods it's probably worth starting out fishing at 3 different depths in different areas of the swim, and take it from there.

 

There will be plenty of people there who can help out too, not only with advice but also help with marker rods and spodding and anything else. Assuming I'm there on the first day I'm very happy to help out and provide the marker/spodding gear if anyone would like any pointers. It's a very friendly syndicate and we all want the guests to catch as much as possible, and all info and guidance is freely shared

With regard to putting much bait out for the tench, would you put some feed into a 2-3 spots and fish those and if you start to catch spod more bait over the top of them..... or would you try to put just enough bait in to last untilmidday the next day?
