You could always go for one with the old 3.5 v8 fitted they are just about unburstable I have had 3 in Rover SDI's, and some might say I tried to burst them, with what I did to them...hehehe...my wife would certainly say so...but that's another story

As I previously mentioned in another thread, I was thinking of a 4 x 4 but after considering everything I will be looking to the large Japanese for good engine build quality, maybe a Patrol, Land Cruiser, the large mitsubishi (Shogun ? ), the Jeep is a bit too thirsty and Hummers are only any good if they are ex-military Mind you the ex-military Land Rovers are pretty good say the Defender model.

Nissan patrol's are quite good off road, Land Cruisers less so and Jeeps fecking useless. For the ultimate off road vehicle it has to be a coil sprung Land Rover. Engine choice is the only issue. As you say, the 3.5 is almost unbreakable if serviced properly.

Shoguns? The worst off road vehicle (or on road come to that) that I've ever had the misfortune of trying to do a job with. I managed to rip the suspension off on a rutted track that I'd been taking my Dad's Toyota Carina down! On road they are just bloody frightening over 15mph!

If tradition and carbon footprint worries aren't your thing then I understand an Isuzu 3.2 weasel engine in a Range Rover is quite a good compromise!

My offroad 'needs' are few and far between. A bit of snow and ice, maybe some loose stuff when sea fishing and the odd muddy puddle when carp fishing. It's just nice knowing you can get out of normal situations that road cars struggle with. I've been looking at Range Rovers simply because I like the sheer size of them.

Carbon footprints and the like don't bother me. My other cars have already condemned me to bunny-hugger hell :D

I did have a Jap import Trooper once. The handling on it was done by Lotus, allegedly. That was a 3l diesel. Even took it on a few fish-ins. It was all going so well until I blew the engine up :D

I have just been told to avoid Jeeps, by a friend whose girlfriend has one and he is a pretty good man with a spanner.

Because every time a light on the dash lights up its £48.00 plus vat for the garage to check out what it means let alone do anything.

You cant top up the gearbox oil with out the same problem and if the number 4 injector goes its an engine out job to change it.

Is it true? Does anyone know of other problems with Jeeps?

Yes, unmitigated disaster areas.

Useless off road, heavy on fuel, more luggage area in a Morris Traveller, decidedly dodgey transfer boxes, that can throw you into low box at motorway speeds (hopefully sorted out now), bloody ugly and.....American (sorry Newt) just not built for mud!

A shagged out Series 2 petrol Landy would do a better job!

Many thanks Worms certainly one to stay well away from...my problem is I have not owned a 4 x 4 since I got rid of my old 109 series 3 Land Rover but fancy getting another one. I need it to carry quite a lot and I prefer big non diesel engines (allergy to diesel) and I like manual gear boxes. Perhaps I should look at a defender?

Only if you want an old one mate. They haven't put a petrol engine in a defender for years.....unless of course you can get a NAS model (North American Specification). Contacting some of the better secondhand dealers might find you a South African model (RHD).

blimey the snow must be talking after owning two series 3 (long and short) i would never buy anything land rover ever again :o

son had a disco 3? completely rusted through ,over priced ,over hyped junk

my mates first 4x4 (some small japanese thing) run circles round my long base and he didn't have to get out in the mud to dis engage the front wheels free wheel action.

mileage isnt down to miles its how the car was looked after doing them ;) my volvo has done 280thou it looks like its done 280thou inside but the engine is still pretty tight for its age ,they had a 19 year design life anyway so its only now started on its decline

I'll have a mull over this info over the next few weeks. I was hoping to buy a Range Rover early next year, but just happened to spot a potential one a couple of days back. As the guy hasn't got back to me, it looks like I may stick to my original plan :)

Personally I would never consider a Range Rover. A friend of mine has had two and they have been nightmares. I had to drive one of them 1300kms while towing a boat when it had no suspension. The suspension it had was pnuematic and one of the bags burst. On a second occasion we had to drive it around 500kms with no suspension because one of the pipes burst. Personally I find it difficult to go past a Nissan Patrol, they are absolutely brilliant off road and will leave a Range Rover in its exhaust fumes.
