We both must be blind or have crap monitors Andy because I still cant either!

I saw the 2 shapes (after some intense staring) but they didn't remotely strike me as being fish.

It was a pond though, different scenario, a river roach is a different to a pond fish as is most other species in they they demand more skill to catch. Personally I dont get the buzz from catching stillwater roach at all, but it's all a matter of opinion.

I too like to have a bend in my rod and the last serious one was November 3rd at about 3.40 pm when a 12.12 Warwickshire Avon Barbel gave me the run around, and ten minutes later his smaller mate at 10.2 did it all over again. That was the last time I have been barbel fishing, the weather and work has curtailed that, but to keep my hand in I love trottting a stick, for anything, I am happy with a 2oz chublet or a 5lb chub, the only thing that matters is seeing that red tip bury, and I know I have what is on offer on the feed. I also like a bit of tipping too, but sitting still in this weather is just a bit too cold.

So I am grateful even if I am getting on a bit, that I still retain the tiddler bashing mentality of my youth and have also found in later years the stunning fight barbel and carp can give, but can revert to either. But I reckon tiddler bashing is far kinder to the heart :D

totally agree a river catch like that is something special and im sure it holds a dear place in bobs heart and he deserved it. like a few have said if you keep doing the right things you are gonna appear luckier , sure the fish were in front of him but he kept them there , you might class 1 big roach as luck but theres craft to catching that many even if he did know they were around at the bottom of the stretch at that time of year.

we can all agree thou we are all the better for him doing it to make passion for angling what it is :D

Just watched the Midwinter Madness episode for the umpteenth time on Shed - my favourite episode of APFA by far as it's entirely filmed on 'my' stomping ground. Think the only swim I haven't fished is the grayling one! Definitely preferable to being out in it today!

thats gotta be lovely having such a beutifull stretch of river enjoy . How does it fish these days and do the big roach still congregate at the end of the stretch at the end of season ?

me and my dad used to fish a place on the river arun at stopham stopham bridge in pulburough the very last week of the season every year. It was only steve gardener that also knew about the spot and the three of us were there every year catching 40 to 50lb bags of lovely roach and the very occasional bream would show , i had my first proper bream there in 1986 ( 6lb) and it holds a special place in my heart

I havent been back there for 10 years now and cant for the life of me understand why ive left it so long. Maybe the roach arent there now i dont know

Does anyone else know the stretch im talking about ?

Ive probably let a massive cat out here. oh well
