Light lure rod ?

Croix

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a 7' two piece lure rod, casting weight 5 - 15g approx, for fixed spool reel. I currently have a Ron Thompson rod of similar spec but am looking to replace it with a better quality one as I'm doing more and more of this light lure fishing.

I'm looking for a typical 'American' actioned rod, very fast and tippy with a bit of power lower down, rather than some of the sloppy actioned lure rods on the UK market.

The St Croix PS70MLF2 seems very nice but I can't find one in the UK so would have to order one from America (still waiting to hear what the shipping charges would be from Bass-Pro), can anyone suggest any similar rods that may be available in the UK, Fenwick maybe ?

Thanks

hi, i do a lot of light spinning too, with small spinners and rubber worms etc for perch and chub, i use a shakespear 7 ft 2 - 15 gm casting Aerial spin, its 2 pc and has a great action for flicking out light lures, it bends well even on a half pound perch yet has plenty back bone, i landed a 5 lb carp on it no probs the other week!

It has a cork handle, screw locking seat, fully lined rings, carbon with a wrap around it, a very nice looking rod, and a great fishing tool!

i paid 40 quid for mine, i think thats about the retail price!

hope that helps!

Not sure you will be able to match a St Croix unless with a G Loomis. Pricy but you are getting what you pay for and IMO there are no better ready-made rods for lure angling anywhere.

If you want to go for slightly lower costs and can't find a UK brand you favor, I have used a number of the Bass Pro rods (their house brand) and can highly recommend them.

Folks like nightwing who works for a large tackle shop and gets serious discounts or those with lots of money can afford the St Croix/G Loomis rods and I can only envy them. However, the Bass Pro rods are nearly as good and lots cheaper.

Two quality rods that I can highly recommend are the Daiwa Samurai 7' 3 to 15 gms or the Shimano Diaflash EX 210ML 5 to 20 gms. For U/L for pike I think the Daiwa is a tad light, and liable to control loss, but the Shimano is spot on! Its got the power lower down for when you need it.

And before anyone asks, no I don't have any problems with light gear and pike. The Shimano can land a pike in next to no time, even an acrobatic summer one. But no, its not for a beginner!

Thanks for the replies guys.

Newt, I know what you mean regarding St Croix and G Loomis rods, I have a couple of each for heavier lurefishing and the're the best lure rods I've ever used, and I've tried a few.

I've now ordered the PS70MLF2 from Bass-Pro, couldn't resist, just got to wait for the postman now :)

Looked at the Shimano this afternoon Peter, and while I liked the action I wasn't too keen on the handle arrangment, nice rod though.

Cheers

Dave

Just how are you going to manage to go fishing without that arm and leg though?

The D Geezer

:D:D Really though even after shipping, import tax, VAT, etc it isn't that much dearer than buying the Shimano rod at retail price in the UK.
