The forecast looks OK for another bash next weekend - heavy rain tomorrow night then dry the rest of the week. That should be enough to colour the water a little, it's gone back to being very clear again now. The low temperatures don't seem to worry them too much (although the milder the better) but the right colour is really important. Too clear, and they're so spooky they become very difficult, too coloured and I think they barely feed (I've never managed a bite when it's like that anyway!).

 

Almost all the bigger fish have now come from a short bit of water within the stretch I've been exploring, so I think that's the bit I'm going to concentrate on for the rest of the season. Seven more weekends, and many prayers for good conditions, to come!

Great looking fish Anderoo, Is the Thames all free fishing or are there club stretches?

 

It's a mixture of both around here, mostly club stretches, but really cheap.

Excellent fish Andrew and well deserved. What is the potential for a big Roach

 

Pretty slim I think Paul. The biggest I have seen was a lovely roach of 1lb 7oz, caught by Chris a few seasons ago. There are bound to be a few bigger ones dotted about, but I think you'd need a very dedicated approach to find and catch them. I think the river is particularly suited to chub and perch beacuse of a combination of environment (flow, depth and cover) and unlimited food (crays), which the roach couldn't really benefit from. There are also a lot of small fish (roach, dace, chub, perch, bleak, bream) so competition for food is high for the non-cray eaters.

Superb looking Chub... and even better weights! Congratulations on a great weekends fishing! :D

 

I have a day off Wednesday, looking forward to a WHOLE days fishing without thinking about work or what DIY jobs the misses has for me at home :D Lets hope I can just get something half as good as what you caught at the weekend!

Yesterday was a blank. It was really cold with a biting NE wind, and very clear water. I didn't know whether to bother today, but it seemed a little milder and the wind had dropped away, so I gave it a couple of hours, but fished different spots to yesterday. It actually felt quite warm when the sun came out, although I expected the bright sunshine to make it even more difficult.

 

As it turned out, it didn't. I had two bites today, resulting in two really powerful chub that both times made me wonder what on earth I'd hooked! The first was from the slow, reedy bay where I ended up last weekend, another new fish, and a cracker too of 5lb 14oz:

The second was from a new spot where the current looked only just OK (I thought it might be too fast), but it was deep enough to just about be alright. This was again a new fish, and settled one ounce over the magic '6':

Both were fairly long and slim, with plenty of room for more weight.

 

It was really nice to catch up with Rich too. All in all, a really great day :)
