Good luck Budgie, I wish I could get out mid-week with the big rise in termperatures... bah!

Over the last couple of weekends I've sussed how to catch the chub in cold and clear conditions. When it's a little coloured and mild, you get the bite within 10 minutes - bait up, wait 5 minutes, then fish for 5 minutes. When it's cold and clear I've been going round the houses, trying different depths, flows, cover, more/less/no bait, fishing further away so as not to scare them, all sorts.

It's actually simply down to timing. Same type and amount of bait, same types of spots, but you bait up then leave the swim for at least half an hour, preferably an hour. Then creep back in, put in a little more bait, and cast, then fish it for at least half an hour. Then you catch them.

I used to think the main problem in cold, clear water was they were extra spooky and not as hungry. I think the simple fact is that it takes them longer to follow the bread trail up to the baited spot. They clearly still eat a lot, as most of them are coughing up loads of bread mash. If there's no-one in the swim when they get there, I think they eat the lot and then because it's cold, just sit there, waiting for you to turn up! Even so, it can still take half an hour to get the bite.

So far, the average size has been higher in these conditions too.

Another fantastic day's chubbing here. It started badly, I fished a lot of water with no indications at all and couldn't work out why - conditions were good, apart from the strong blustery wind making bite detection tricky. But nothing happened.

I eventually got a bite from a fairly non-descript bit of water, the only interesting thing is that most of the flow was going along the far bank, so the near half of the river was very slow or even totally slack. A short, scary tussle with a very strong fish ended with this belting chub of 6lb 6oz:

Rich turned up shortly after and set up for perch, while I carried on searching for feeding chub. Again, nothing happened in any of the swims, it was very odd. So we both ended up back at the same spot I had the chub from earlier, me carrying on with the bread and Rich touch legering with lobs.

I had another bite after about 15 minutes, a chub that pretended to be enormous, it was so powerful! At 4lb 7oz he wasn't the biggest chub in the Thames but he certainly packed a punch!

Shortly after I missed another bite and then Rich hit a bite on the lobs, and found himself attached to something very serious indeed. We thought it might be a carp or even a very rare barbel, but no - it was a chub, and clearly a big fish. After managing to bring him in we heaved him onto the bank and had a good look. Blimey, what a fish! Not fat at all, but big in every direction. The scales read 6lb 11oz - what a chub!

Darkness then fell and it was time to retreat. It was a superb session, it's nice to catch big fish, but even nicer to share them with friends, I'm so pleased that Rich managed one of the big ones, especially after losing a big fish last time to a snag.

Isn't it strange though, that although I fished a lot of water today, all the bites came from one swim? Every time you think you have these chub sussed, they throw in a curved ball like that :)

Look, it's about time you stopped playing around with all these piddly 6lbers each week and caught yourself some really big chub.

Seriously though, what a session! Congratulations to you both! :clap2::clap2:

More six pounders! Tip top fishing. Well done.

I haven't been able to buy a bite since the the start of winter.

In between those whopper fish did you catch smaller ones too today, but just not bother to report on them? Or is it just a case of big fish or bust?

No, amazingly the smallest fish I've had in the last month was the 4.7 today. The average size is potty, it just gets better and better! When I started this little project before xmas I really had no idea the fishing would be this good, I have to keep pinching myself!

It just goes to show what's lurking in these little bits of overlooked rivers.

That fish of Richard's with a full belly would be well over 7lb.
