Fish 'n' Tips

I'm rather looking forward to seeing the first issue, I enjoy Mark's predator bits in the Mail and do not see what is wrong with producing a "different" format and content to the current angling mags. It may well not be what most Anglers Net regulars might like, but I think it might well find a market.

There are plenty of lad style mags knocking about Loaded, FHM, Nuts etc and the chances are that a percentage of the buyers of these publications may well enjoy fishing. So I see nothing wrong with maybe merging the idea of of a mag for blokes with angling. Why does everything have to be high brow?

Nothing wrong with a bit of fun.

Stephen

The thing is Mark I think you have missed a trick here, I can't believe you are not aware that a large majority of Anglers talk of Angling mags as 'comics' and would not buy the because nothing of interest, quality or new is ever written. So why do you do you sink even deeper into the Abyss and come up with a mag that needs soft porn and innuendo to sell it, and to just WHO exactly?

Have you surveyed Anglers as to what they look for in a weekly? If you did I can't believe they would have voted for t1ts and b*ms to be plastered all over the cover, irrespective of the intended good writing inside.

Please re-think the format and don't sell Angling in this light, geez we have enough trouble as it is with the fairer sex in deserting them most week ends.

Barbel Society... pah!!

First off mate its not a weekly but a monthly.

Secondly that is NOT the actual front cover, the actual cover is a bit more toned down

thirdly I take it that none of the complainers have ever bought a copy of the sun, in which you will see more than you will in the new mag?

As Dales said, why does everything have to be hybrow, whats wrong with a bit of fun and a laugh?

You got something right eventually: I have never bought a copy of the Sun.

Tits and bums don't bother me, (I quite like them really, but see no need of them in an angling mag ) but Suzy Snatchpiece et al are just so juvenile and tacky Mark

So which is it? ------------ "a bit of fun and a laugh" or "100% serious"

Hi Mark

I wouldn't mind betting that this format was decided for you by the publisher, I reckon your hands are tied, it's a shame as this will do nothing but to further dumb down Angling, which is a pity. Angling offers a wealth of good literary oppurtunity without the need to wrap it up in sleeze.

Issac Walton would turn in his grave <_<

Sorry to ask again but was the angling community asked what they would want from a new publication?

how exactly would you ask the "angling community" what they want? The angling world is so split and diversified that you are never going to get something to please everyone, as has been abley proved by this thread.

I will leave you with this thought though.

The BBC is world renowned for its high quality programmes, its news and sports coverage etc and yet one programme is so succesful that it provides something like a quarter of the beeb's entire income. That programme is Top Gear, which is far from being high brow, and basically involves three middle aged men messing about in a subject they enjoy whilst acting like kids and innuendo aplenty. ;)

Mind you they also produce Eastenders :wallbash:

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

I love Top Gear :)

I love the idea that anything more intellectually stimulating than Suzy Snatchpiece or The Sun is now classed as highbrow :D Is there nothing between The Sun and Sartre any more?

Fun, jokes, laughter and shared experiences is what fishing with friends is all about. A mag that captures that without being juvenille and tacky would definitely get a few quid from me every month :)

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Top Gear I love it too Mark, but yep the sexism is there and all the non PC stuff I love all that...but the one thing you should remember the programme has CLASS it is quite SUBTLE too and not in 'yer face mate :D

The format that you propose fot this lads come fishing mag is none of the above...but hey what the hell you think you know your target audience without doing any research (that would be as in consumer research Mark) which answers your other question I hope.

But just do it, but remember that those that do not fish will have the image of those that do as being some sort of beer swilling sex pest is to say the least a cop out...you have a chance to do a lot better, PM me if you need some better material :D

you have quite obviously made up your mind mate so its pointless debating the topic with you.

Blimey, lots of opposing views over a monthly that hasn't been published yet.

I recall an old saying..........never judge a book by its cover particularly if you haven't seen the final cover (I added the last bit). The first issue will be a sellout Mark so you'd better make sure the photocopier's up to the task.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

No Mark debate it's the way things are changed for the better, you just have an open mind.

Look Mark to be serious, you seem one of hell of a nice and guy and a good angler too, I have seen Tight Lines and and do know of you through other aspects of the media, all we are saying is give class a chance

Reading between the lines and as I mentioned previously I reckon you are being lead down this path by the Publishers..No?

Well we all have to work I suppose  So I guess if you earn a bit from the thing you love then good on you, I just wish I could say the same.

Best of luck.

of course the publishers dictate the path that the magazine takes to a point, but if i didnt agree with the format I wouldnt make a very good editor.

I honestly believe that there is a place for this magazine that it can grab with both hands. I speak to a lot of guys on the bank and on forums that say they dont read magazines anymore as they know the majority of the technical aspects of the sport, what they want is a good read and i can hand on heart say that this is because i have picked the guys and the stories myself.
