Playing fish with two hands on the rod

One handing the rod is fine with smaller fish.

Bigger ones and if you have to net for yourself, rod butt against the leg or something and a hand above the reel is a comfortable way to do things.

One handing a rod with a large fish on and not bracing the rod butt against anything might be fine for a seriously large weight lifter but for us normal mortals, it just ain't reasonable. Even if you could manage, why?

Ah, I see the joke now what a silly old f####r I am

I was referring to the fact that I fish every day (?) and am always catching loads of big fish :P:P ...I'm definitely not a ##anker.

Didn't quite work out there, but 9/10 for effort :D:D

Years ago, I fished a lake with deep margins that were frequented by lean mid to upper double figure Carp. Once hooked these bloody things fought hard & dirty under your rod top & along the margins.

After your first encounter, you soon learned to reduce the strain on your wrist & forearm by holding the rod 18" or so further up with your left hand. Trust me Peter, it is no poseur trick in that situation.

Here we go again, some opinion on the right and wrongs of "how to".

What,s wrong with playing a fish in the kneeling position if it feels comfortable, sit or stand in a boat if it feels comfortable, one or both hands up the rod IF it feels comfortable, to who ever wants to do it.

It's an individual thing, we don't fish like robots, or do we?

Forget sea-fishing in this debate where holding a rod just above the reels is often a norm. I'm left wondering, like Whicker Dave, why some people hold their rods as they do.

Okay, so I have never caught a 40 pound carp, but I have had pike to over thirty.

You can only put so much pressure on a rod, you can only put so much pressure on hook and line.

Provided its a suitable and balanced outfit you cannot put more than so much strain on the fish or the gear without the risk of something pulling. Is it fair on the welbeing of a fish to use such brute-force?

I am going to put my head on the block here and SUGGEST that the need to hold a rod, as seen by W.Dave, is less to do with posing and more to do with the fashionable trend of fishing with excessively over-gunned tackle!

Could also be something to do with the length of your rods ??

Playing a large fish on a 12/13/14ft rod for several minutes can be tiring so a helping hand up the rod takes the strain off your wrist.

Nothing to do with "pressuring the fish" "weak wristed" or "posing", simply common sense fish playing, and something I have done for years.

As I said in an earlier post, this technique has been recognised by Leeda (at least) and was not because of "overgunned" tackle, but rather the opposite i.e. due to the length of time it sometimes takes to land a big fish on MEDIUM strength tackle.

I have a reputation for playing my fish hard and bullying them into the net and do not use two hands for that, but if I am bream or roach fishing with a 13ft medium feeder rod and I hook a large (10lb+) carp then I find I start to use two hand automatically as the fight progresses into several minutes.

DG, "that" word I was looking for was Father

As I said before, each to their own. I once witnessed someone continually bending his knees almost to the sitting position while pumping in a fish (note for any none anglers:- this is a fish playing technique and not a sex act). In the case of a big fish and a long fight, I prefer to jam the rod butt into my groin - something I find strangely satisfying. Holding the rod further up the butt might help in some situations, but what really makes me laugh are those people who preciously place one or two fingers, barely touching the rod, as if they are playing a bloody violin. I wouldn't mind betting they only do it when there's a camera pointing at them though.
