Ware to fish for Grayling

I would like to have a go for Grayling but don’t know where to start, I will be using coarse tackle as I do not have any fly tackle and may be it’s a bit late at 72 year old to think about fly fishing. What short of bait would be best? And what is the best time of the season. Anyone knows of any good rivers that are on a day ticket or better still free and not to far from Bedfordshire as I am an OAP with limited founds.

Thank

Hi Tony and welcome to AN.

I cant help you with venues but if you go armed with a float rod, reel line of 3lb and a selection of chubber floats you should be ok. in regards to bait maggots and sweetcorn are the best. Best time of year will be in the winter when the rivers are running clear. They can be caught in summer too, just look for weirs and fast pacey glides between weedbeds ect. keep the bulk of shot about a foot from the hook with a number 4 dropper below this.

hope some of this helps

Ant

Hi barbeldave

I live in Flitwick. I know there are no Grayling in the Gt.Ouse I have fished it for years. It look like the Kennet is the only local one with Grayling, this leads me on to more questions how do I find the local tackle shop which may have information about the Kennet. It would seam to me that know one is interested in Grayling fishing.

Tony - really wrong time of year to be thinking of grayling!!! Grayling to be found in the upper reaches (Upstream of Kintbury)of the Kennet - a few to be found at Barton Court - DT's are 12 quid though the best grayling fishing is upstream of here - don't know of any free bits of the Kennet that have Grayling. Failing that you could try the Test at Timsbury - gauranteed grayling here - DT's were 15 quid last season. Lower Itchen for the big ladies though we're now upto 17quid for DT's...

Welcome Tony. At 72 you have a year advantage of me - so now I am the youngster on the block :D . (Another recent poster is 76 - any other regular posters able to beat that?)

As Chris Plumb says, this is not the best time for grayling - autumn to the end of the coarse river season is better.

Down here south of London, we have grayling in the Sussex Ouse and Medway - most of them in club-controlled waters though - very few day tickets available.

I think there is another day-ticket water above Barton Court. Its just before you get to Hungerford, Denford I think its called. I haven't fished there but heard there are more grayling than at Barton Court. I've fished Barton Court a few times and yet to see a grayling. Good for other species though.
