Obviously I was never taken up on the offer to do a fair like-for-like test of stonze against normal leads; I was being serious too, it would have been 100% fair and unbiased. However, this year I proved to myself that, if you get the important things right, even hookbait isn't necessarily important, never mind the weight on the line

I haven't bought a magazine for ages now, I finally gave up on them completely, so I have no idea what the current state of them is. There was a great deal of backlash on the various forums a while ago about the crazy levels of product placement in articles, which seesm to have died down now - so maybe things have improved a bit?

I'm sure there was some underwater footage of barbel in clear water feeding happily around a bright blue smurf that was being used as a weight, on one of the barbel DVDs...

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Just got back from Brazil and catching up on the threads.

This one was most entertaining and enlightening.

Fancy leads ? Yes I am all for them and I have a lifetime's supply - all for free, as they grow on waterside trees as a sort of epiphyte. They usually come with a fancy rig attached.

I invariably spot two or three at certain club waters, and after a fishing session can usually sling a spinner onto the trailing line and drag them down.

Removing lost lines also keeps the fishery owners happy.

I am, however a bit mystified as to why anglers sling so much tackle into trees - beginners, yes, I can understand why they lose gear, but aren't these fancy/camo/swivelled/specialised chunks of metal (or aluminosilicate) being used by the angling elite ?

I've not read every page of this thread but I'm hoping that the main gist has been "dont waste your money".

If any fish was scared/put off by the sight of a lead weight, then they must all swim about terrified. Just think how many swimfeeders, leads, shot etc are laying around the bottom of most rivers and lakes.

Dont be brainwashed by magazines. You dont need X rods and Y reels filled with 15lb fluoro etc etc. Many magazines do one thing these days, they sell bait, tackle and tickets.

Phil, please don't pour cold water on this idea just as I start to produce my own series of camo weights.

Due to the success of my 'Styx' (mentioned earlier in the thread), my mind turned to an, as yet untapped area of angling, the urban angler.

After much research and testing, I have come up with 'Canz' (patent pending). These are weights that can be produced with a design to suit any urban water. My research has shown that a lager logo is by far the most popular, followed closely by energy drinks, sweetcorn and luncheon meat. We can produce a weight to match most popular brands, at a set price, (any smaller, local brands cost a little extra). These weights are guaranteed to blend in with the bottom of any urban fishery. (Stella Artois being particularly effective on most carp waters).

My development team are also working on a range for the truly inner city fisheries. These include a range of 'Supermarket Trollieez' (with local company logo), 'Bikeframz', 'Carwheelz, and even 'Deadcatz'. Our ultimate weights will be the 'Bodeez' range for the fisheries in the less 'desirable' areas. These will require ordering at least 2 weeks prior to delivery, so my associates ( Messrs Burke and Hare) can source suitable models to match the customers requirements.

More information to follow.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

The difference between a beginner and an elite is the price of their kit.

That's the very point I was making - Perhaps British irony does not travel well.

I think beach anglers must use an awful lot of Stonz...the beaches are covered with pebbles with holes in.............discards maybe?

For various reasons - mainly a health problem- I have been reading a lot of the type of magazine I wouldnt normally buy-in a strictly angling context.....I have actually learned some useful stuff but the standard of writing is shockingly low in many cases(maybe it always was ?),the amount of product placement is laughable and the gullibility of some fishermen is shocking if they reallly believe they have to buy the latest snake oil to have even a chance of a fish- or is it credibility on the bankside innit ?
