I think I've said enough on this subject within other threads but Cambridge, with it's past reputation for intellectual revolutionaries, might seem a suitable hunting ground for abolishionists.

Well I my opinion it was just a simple letter to fill space in the paper.

As to what you do when confronted by a thug, defend your self?? Happened to me many years ago on the river Nidd the chap had a shotgun next thing you know was he was in the River and the gun was smashed over tree trunk and stuck in the bank barrels first.

I was with my oldman Ex British Army "Queens Hounors" he did not stand for any ******* about.

But in todays world we would have been locked up for what we did

i agree we need to be calm as we can about this one. if we come across as thugs, it will give them one more bullet in there gun. if we are calm then we can stay out of the news and make it much harder to tuch us never mind ban the sport.

Interestingly it comes from a woman, from a London W1 address. Some women destest seeing men enjoy themselves. Some city folk should stick to city matters. Must be pretty well heeled to live in London W1, wonder how she earns her living, and what effect her activities have on the environment?

Might this letter have been written by a member of the CA? Answers on a post card! A simple 'yes' will do! Its either the CA or the RCA up to their misguided dirty tricks.

Last week's CA ad in Anglers Mail was pure panic mongering in an attempt to enrol anglers on the march. Interestingly I wrote, and phoned, to the Advertising Standards people, and to A.M., to complain. I felt the ad was misleading. Coincidently this weeks ad is rather lower key.

Sam Tench speaks with much wisdom.

That same Theresa Thom has had an identical letter published in tonight's Peterborough Evening Telegraph. It's funny how she has had an identical experience in two different places simultaneously. I sent this following reply in earlier, before seeing the post on this site. Some of you may not approve, but tough:

"There was certainly something fishy about Theresa Thom's emailed letter in last night's E.T.

The rather exaggerated rhetoric suggests that she did not attend a fishing match at all, but was merely repeating a standard script composed for mass circulation as a propaganda exercise.

The fact is that the Countryside Alliance are rather miffed at most angling bodies' total rejection of their attempts to coerce anglers into supporting the doomed practice of hunting with hounds. Their only hope is to use whatever means necessary to bracket anglers with their barbaric cause, and to use scaremongoring tactics in an attempt to force an unholy alliance.

I suggest that Theresa Thom is actually a supporter of fox hunting, and has submitted this desperate letter in a futile attempt to provoke the support of anglers. It is not the first time that the fox hunting crowd have attempted to divert attention towards anglers while simultaneously courting their support, but they have been caught out, and will soon find that such disingenuous tactics will leave them even further alienated than before.

Anglers are now the only effective guardians of this country's water resources, and those who would seek to criticise anglers have shown themselves to be completely indifferent to the true threats to our native fish in the face of abstraction, pollution, and over predation by the ever increasing numbers of cormorants. What actions have these anti-anglers ever taken to preserve not only the fish population, but the aquatic environment generally? The simple answer is none."

English as tuppence, changing yet changeless as canal water, nestling in green nowhere, armoured and effete, bold flag-bearer, lotus-fed Miss Havishambling, opsimath and eremite, feudal, still reactionary, Rawlinson End.

Apologies, Shropshire Star letter reads slightly differently;- Quote

I had the considerable displeasure of witnessing an act of great cruelty on a visit to a popular fishing spot near your offices on Saturday.

A group of people were engaged in a fishing match.

I could not believe that this hideous and grotesquely cruel practise is still permitted .

The poor fish were being dragged through the water with an evil barbed hook in their mouth and then had their cold blooded flesh scalded by being handled by warm blooded men and unbeleivably women also. These poor creatures were left suffocating in a net until the end of the competition, then again manhandled. We must end this evil practice as soon as possible. End of quote

So Mss. Thom's letter was E.Mailed! Say no more. Peter, your letter is spot on, perfect. Perhaps you can E.Mail it to every newspaper in the country.

Cue Jim Roper!! Hi Jim!
