There was not much space for comment, so I simply put

I just put "Pike are an important part of the eco-system. In the twentieth century i can't believe people still want to remove these animals that take out ill and diseased fish by eating them, they even control their own population so i see no reason whatsoever for removing these fish"

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

If I was runnining a fishery and wanted just silver fish for match type fishing, then I would not want pike in there. Same as if it were a trout fishert.

Nothing to do with natural balance and all the other stuff usually spouted when pike are removed, simply no place for them in that type of fishery.

They did also remove the carp I noticed, I assume that is OK ?

No I don't think its necessary to remove the carp or the pike across all of their waters Den.If its an enclosed water then fine remove fish/stock as you see fit for the fishing on that water,Any "imbalances" that it may or may not cause (and I believe it allways does) can then be relatively easily controlled by further management.....................but on "open ended" waters like rivers and many stretches of canals I think it is both unecesary, irresponsible and selfish. Surely all the clubs/associations that rent stretches from BW should have some say? A lot of people only buy tickets to target the pike or carp on some areas.

The removal of carp incidentally is just as common (big carp that is) as BW's constant war against Pike and Zander. The reason is (according to BW) that the match anglers only want the smaller sized carp (that are often stocked by the clubs and BW) as when they grow bigger they "take to long to land in matches"!!!!! At least the carp are transferred alive to BW's commercial carp waters,The Zander and most of the pike are simply killed.

Are the canals the last bastion of the "anti every other type of angling" match angler? or are BW still living in the past?

Ive never liked BW's fishery management policies full stop not just from the perspective of a predator angler either.

Den, do you think that the canals should be run purely with anglers in mind? They are not an isolated still water, they feed into rivers, and the action taken here can have a knock on effect over a wide area.

If it was the choice between pike and carp, the pike win. Surprisingly, a water can survive without carp, but predators are an essential part of the well being of a water.

John.

EDIT, Cross posted with Budgie.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John
