Its generally believed that the alcohol acts as an emulsifier allowing the natural oils in the bait (normally an oily fleshed sea bait) to escape/dissipate more.

However IMHO its the same as adding flavours to dead bait, dying them or injecting oil.......................something that may/may not give you a slight edge over others on heavily fished waters but no substitute for other far more important angling skills such as location and presentation.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I reckon the one thing that will catch you more pike, is getting up earlier than everyone else.

Agree with that.

Now vodka has very little flavour of its own, unlike something like rum.

Anecdote coming on......

In my teenage matchfishing days (I grew out of matchfishing at age 20 :P ) I used to use rum-flavoured breadpaste - it caught fish, and I made no secret of my additive.

Having won the local club's freshwater cup, it was no surprise that at the following AGM one respected member stood up and said that alcohol harmed fish, and using rum-flavoured bait was unfair to other competitors and it should be banned. There followed a tirade against the evils of strong drink etc.

It rather took the wind out of his sails when I pointed out I used rum essence, obtainable at the grocers, as was the aniseed flavour (made by the same firm) used by many of the other matchfishers at the club.

Haven't used rum essence for years now, but perhaps its time to try again, using the real thing this time. A slug of rum into my bread paste, and another into my coffee flask - sounds a plan. Hic

A little noggin of Ricard might be a useful adjunct as well. ;) Edited by corydoras

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

heard of an old guy up the canal who used to dip his whole herring in to a tub of miller before casting.
You could probably get 6 months in the Bar-L Ranch for that Andy. ;)

I first read of Irish anglers using kippers and whiskey about 105 years ago, when I was knee-high to a grasshopper.

Anyway, much Hovis later, I found out that oil emusifiers were alcohol based, as our Budgie has already pointed out and then found out that Winterized oils didn't need emulsifiers, so never bothered my arse trying booze out. I don't drink the stuff, so I was hardly going to buy it for the fish.

My favourite oils are Baitbox Winterized Salmon and Kalium Aniseed (could maybe try Pernod if that that floats your boat) and I'm happy using those just those two, if and when I actually use oils.
